Biden improved the economy but his economic approval ratings were in the toilet.

The US economy is growing and there is positive job growth but people don't feel wealthier. Like in the UK, people have been feeling the impact of high inflation, low wage growth, high cost of living and a housing crisis. That seems to be a key factor in why so many, including Democrat voters have swung to Trump. A lot of Americans don't feel like their lives have improved under the Biden administration, and Harris was inevitably tied to that.

Is the US economy really that bad? On The News Agents they said the median salary was $88,000!

Are they in a cost of living crisis? I thought Biden’s inflation busting bill was a huge success?

Whilst yes, American's get take home more than Brits and Europeans, remember they have to pay so much more for things that are taken care of by the state here. They also get shite holiday, sick, and maternity pay too.

Whilst I am here - New York slid from a 23% lead to 11%. New Jersey from 16% to 5%.

I am not saying there is a trend, but imagine a world where IL and NJ (with 33 EVs between them) became competitive.
I dont think its a trend. I think things will return to "normal" in 4 years. This was just the perfect storm of pent up frustration, Biden's cognitive decline and a disastrous candidate and campaign.

That said, its astonishing just how much the blue states have been hit, even with all of the above. The "Americans are stupid" rhetoric is hugely ill-informed.

I mean it all depends on where you live. I have an education and have been a nurse for 25 years and barely make $50,000 a year.

Average rent for a small apartment in my area is around $850 a month. Groceries are higher than they were previously. Gas is currently $2.50 to $3 a gallon.

Most people here make minimum wage or a little over.

Their food prices are higher than ours too.

In terms of numbers alone, the US economy is doing very well. But inflation has made it very difficult for regular people to reap the benefits of a robust economy. People's ability to absorb the shock of an economic crisis has wavered across the decades.

But geopolitically, the US economy is still that girl.

They were essentially both fodder. The Democrats needed anyone who would look vaguely competitive to take the fall during a sure Trump victory. Harris fit the bill. She was a convenient choice who could run under the banner of "the woman vote" but I don't believe that they had any real hope of her winning.

The silver lining for Blue voters is there a fresh start next election. Trump and Biden are done, and the Democrats have a more promising pool of talent to pick from than Republicans.

It's clear that America likes nostalgia, America likes celebrity, and America likes people who aren't women, so the Democrats can win next time by putting forward that insufferable zany Kennedy off Tik Tok.

I could've sworn this poll showed 0 votes for Trump winning comfortably this time yesterday. What changed your minds @Joseph, @wildchild, @Marina Salty, @Logic?, @Cloud and @Jesse Birdsall?
BBC swing state graphs were very steadily showing the candidates converging on trajectories that could be easily extrapolated imo

When Harris first took over I'd have put her as a comfortable win but it just sort of gradually went back like a piece of memory foam

He won NY by the lowest margin since 1988. Kamala's candidacy was literally a forfeit.

What a fucking mess.
Who knew that all it would take was Trump securing a second term for all the closeted right wingers to come out?
Actually, I always did done knew but let's not make this thread even messier. It's only 09:53 on a Thursday. 💅
