World Cup 2026 (5 Viewers)

It’s way more about a tournament seen as a dealbreaker in “breaking” football in the US opening without one of its biggest stars would be seen as a disaster.

But every World Cup is seen as breaking football in the US. America goes absolutely crazy for the World Cup every time, and as soon as it’s over they forget all about it. It’s been that way for years. They even had their own World Cup not that long ago. Don’t see it changing again.

I'm also wondering if the current political climate lends itself to America jumping on the "soccer" bandwagon.

I suspect even more so than in 1994, they will have little appetite for a sport that the "greatest" country in the world can't win even on home soil.

Yes, I do accept that point, but I don't think it's strictly true as there are a lot more reasons for "soccer" to take off now- the global reach of football is far more visible than in 94, they finally have their own, fairly visible league with Major League Soccer, they've just hosted a major event with loads of money thrown at it this year (Club World Cup) and there's rumours of it going back there for the next edition, the US being really quite good at the women's event has helped, FIFA have allowed the presentation of football to be "Americanised" (look at CWC) and sponsorship is off the scale.

FIFA really want to break football on that side of the world and are throwing themselves at it. The major issue is the US men are still fairly shit and they need to get better before the public gets massively on board, but then that isn't necessarily THAT important in the scheme of things when the cash is rolling in. The empty stadiums didn't do CWC THAT much harm...

:D

In WORLD CUP terms it isn’t

But yeah I thought it was more recent than 94 actually.

Not quite as hilarious as when they hosted the cricket world cup in the US last year. Sure you're going to break that market. Sure you are.

Sounds like something from a Moldovan national final.

It's LITERALLY MY JOB TO WATCH THIS SHIT and I've got it on mute :D

The President of Canada and Carney desperate not to be in the Trump selfie.

They could have had the Fugees, but no Pras Michel just had to go and illegally lobby.

That awful rap cry of FIFA, FIFA, LET'S GO FIFA all feels very focus-group "let's appeal to the kids"...

What was it MADGE said in In Bed With Madonna? "I swear someone put six rows of industry in the front just to piss me off".

An hour on and we have NO NEW RELEVANT INFORMATION.

Who gives a piss about all this?
