Good morning! Almost at work, for what will HOPEFULLY be the last bit of early morning overtime I do for a while... might still have to go in tomorrow and Sunday and possibly give up Monday that I'd already booked off for packing/moving stuff, but we'll see how today goes :eyes:
 
What do you do for a living cob?

We're on our way to the ferry for our holiday. It's absolutely pouring with rain. I hope Cornwall is nicer :argh:

I work in a university print room, so September is always crazy with the new academic year starting (everyone wants their teaching materials and then there's all the promotional stuff for fresher's week etc). This year has been even more full-on than usual though, as it's the first time since 2019 that everything is fully based on campus/in person again. We also had somebody leave relatively abruptly recently (and we're a really small team to begin with) so yes... a bit of pressure :D We will make it through though!
 
There is a greasy spoon next to it that does the BEST bacon sandwiches though so excited for that!
 
The worst drive I've ever done was to St. Ives. It's just SO FAR AWAY. At the end I was knackered and had to tackle all these steep hills. When we eventually got there my car was causing a lovely smell of BURNING to infiltrate the lovely Cornish air. :bad:

Lovely place though. To avoid having to eat a chinese takeaway on your white hotel bedsheets you need to book restaurants in advance though. :eyes:

I love how no matter how many times you do it (if you're driving from the east or north), you are constantly tricked into believing you're close when you get to about Exeter - only to realise that long sticky out bit goes on for about half the width of the country :D

We went to Pembrokeshire recently (which is Cornwall-rivalling levels of beautiful) and I couldn't fathom why it was taking so long when in my head Wales is surely not that big, but again it's another peninsula that sticks out way past where you think it's going to end.
 
On that note I'd probably recommend Pembrokeshire over Cornwall these days. The beaches and coast are just as spectacular, but the roads are ten times easier and it's considerably less crowded, at least when we went which was mid July.

Yes exactly this! It's a smaller scale version of when I flew to Sydney and assumed I was "nearly there" when I hit Australia when I had another 12 hours to go :D

I think there's little between Pembrokeshire and North Cornwall. The advantage with Cornwall is that you have the south coast as well, which has an entirely different flavour.

I can only echo what you and Tisch have said about the distance though - even for me having a head start over any of you coming from further north or east, you hit the Devon/Cornwall border and you're only half way there, if you're going deep into it.

I've got a friend whose parents own and run a big guest house and a few cottages on the Rame Peninsula just across Plymouth Sound where I've stayed on several occasions, and I only realised big Cornwall was staying there, thinking all of Cornwall was on my doorstep. But I can get to London more quickly from here than you can get from one side of Cornwall to the other.

Anyway, for anyone wanting Cornwall but being put off by the distance, I'd very much recommend Rame. It's pretty much forgotten and all the better for it.

Moopy I have a question. This isn't for me. But can you get counselling on the NHS for depression?

My friend has been really struggling recently, with suicidal thoughts. She went to the doctor, they've put her on antidepressants, although she doesn't want them as she knows she needs counselling.
So she asked about counsellors and they e given her a list of private ones that she can't afford?

Thanks to the creeping privatisation of the NHS it isn't an easy question to answer, and what is available will vary all over the country. But the short answer is probably NO in a lot of places, and POSSIBLY in others, but be prepared to spend months (at best) on a waiting list.

We've done Pembrokeshire twice and I agree, it's absolutely stunning. But we're doing Wales in November for the second time this year so thought we'd go for Cornwall this time.

I remember being with @lolly and friends once down that way and driving up a hill and just freaking out when I met an on coming car. I had to get out and one of the others took over :shy:

Yeah same! Steep hills, narrow roads, blind bends and you're already knackered after the 10 hours it takes to get there. Next time I'm taking a train (if trains have reached that part of the world)

That was a lovely upside down cottage though. I don't think I've ever stayed in a better location.
 
The thing I enjoy most about being off work is being able to wake up naturally. Also, your first night with a new mattress and new bedding is super luxurious - you feel as if you're in a hotel.
 
I'll ask in here just incase anyone knows. I'm organising a fundraiser for my friend that has been diagnosed with cancer. We're going to have a raffle. Any leads on getting raffle prizes?
