Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 6: Armenia, Iceland & Moldova (1 Viewer)

Anyway I'm not looking any of them up but Sjonni himself wasn't too bad

frankly I have no idea how I didn't pick up at the time that dying of a stroke at 37 looking like that was REALLY OBVIOUSLY a code for coke overdose

8th: Pollaponk - No Prejudice (56pts)

p01ymwcj.jpg

Oh what fun! :eyes:

Now, to be fair, Pollapönk is literally a punk band for children, presumably indoctrinating them early with some peppy songs about learning your ABCs before they move on to fisting themselves to Hatari in secondary school. So there's a reason this song comes across as a bit of an over-eager puppy,

Still, it provided a good dose of energy in Copenhagen and duly became one of Iceland's more successful entries of the decade (faint praise admittedly). The English lyrics were of course dashed off by none other than not-quite-as-good-as-he-used-to-be Moopy hero John Grant. He should probably just do Eurovision himself at some point, it's not like anybody gives a shit about his albums now he's all 'happy' and 'emotionally stable'.

Anyway it's resolutely NOT FOR HERE, but on its own terms it's fine. NEXT!

1 x 8 (Buttertart)
4 x 0 (Ag, Ill Advised, Alla, Superstylin)

Doesn't he have to actually.....have hair to qualify as a bear? :D I imagine he's the consistency of a LUBED SEAL

I was wondering that. Although I’ve heard some people (admittedly that awful one who went on about his IBS in the Toby) use BEAR as some weird sort of synonym for MAN

9th: Sjonni's Friends - Coming Home (49pts)

sjonnis-friends-01e32086-1742-431c-8981-3d8ea753f31-resize-750.jpg

Oh Moopy, you heartless bastards!

For those unfamiliar with the back story, the original singer/songwriter of this song - one Sjonni Brinck - died suddenly at the age of 37, just before the national final. Rather than withdrawing his entry, a bunch of his pals got together and performed the song in his place, understandably winning a huge national sympathy vote in the process.

The sympathy was a bit more lacking at Eurovision, where this finished a lowly 20th, but then we're talking about a contest that once welcomed a Bosnian who literally fled from Sarajevo in a hail of bulletfire and rewarded him with 16th place. :disco:

Anyway, it's a crap song but as a whole package it's nicely jaunty and heartfelt without being maudlin. And yes, I would 100% have sex with that bear.

1 x 8 (Pingu)
2 x 0 (Jacques, lolly)

Singing a song about your soon to be dead mother written by your talentless father will only get you 15 points.

:D! Harsh but fair! I’ve lost all interest in him and his songs about supposedly terrible men he was with for about five minutes. NEXT INDEED!

I only remember two things about Pollapönk - the purple one at the back went on to become Iceland's health minister, and the comment @COB made about how he'd happily fuck every single one of them.

I'd have FUN with at least half of Pollaponk, even if they probably turn out to be a bunch of nonces.

7th: Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson - Ég á líf (81pts)

Speaking of NOT FOR HERE, I can totally understand why a sad viking wouldn't really float Moopy's vote, but personally I really love this one. It's PRETTY

Both the hair and that glory note go on for just a TOUCH too long, but this was classy fare and I really think Iceland should sing in the MUTTERTONGUE a little more often. It tends to bring out the best in them.

Not much else to say really. For better or worse, this is what Iceland looks like when they embrace DIGNITY.

2 x 8 (dmlaw, VoR)
3 x 1 (Suomi, David_5000, Kalabaliken)

They should ALWAYS sing in Icelandic. By law. With severe punishments of puffin rationing and being locked in a room listening to ‘Biophilia’ on repeat at maximum volume for DAYS ON END if they fail to comply

I’d actually forgotten all about this one but I like his face and hair so perhaps @Penelope might like to source some nudes :)

It was all going too well. Of course Moopy would place the nice song in Icelandic behind several ropy slappers.

The not nice song in Icelandic on the other hand. :disco:

Oh I love Ég á lif. It got a 7 CHEZ PEN

Anyway, that rather AGEING Justin Lee Collins hair (he was TWENTY THREE AT THE TIME!) has always struck me as quite the mistake from someone so FACIALLY HANDSOME

6th: María Ólafsdóttir - Unbroken (81pts)

gallery_music-eurovision-2015-semi-final-2-iceland.jpg

Oh, this poor wee sprite. :(

Predictably, 2015 VoR was OBSESSED with this sugar-fest, and confidently predicted a glorious return to the top ten and possibly even a WIN. I mean, how could it fail???

Alas, even disregarding the unimaginable possibility that I was ludicrously overrating a piece of bland old tat, the vocal on the semi final night fell apart faster than a Moldovan highway. It's all about that tragicomic final moment when she dramatically flips her head back to the crowd with a look that screams "NAILED IT!"

Not quite, babes.

Hera Björk on backing vocals too, presumably gritting her teeth and dreaming of better days.

2 x 8 (Win the Game, Suomi)
1 x 0 (Wurst)

I absolutely howled at the time when some silly twink on Buzzjack or the other confidently predicted Unbroken could do as well as Is It True?. And indeed, SO IT WENT :eyes:

Lovely in studio but honestly, I think I appreciate it all the more for being such a voxastrophe live. In these days of OFFSTAGE BVs and SHADY LADYS DRESSED IN TREES STAGE LEFT, you really DON'T get TITS OUT DISASTER VOCALS ANYMORE!

5th: Greta Salomé - Hear Them Calling (132pts)

greta1.png

Another fan favourite that wound up laying an egg in the semi finals, Greta Salomé's second go around really WAS expected to do very well indeed. What went wrong? It could have been that Russia had a better version of the same stage show, or the truly horrific editing from those venomous Swedish producers, or the fact that poor Greta looked like the after photo on a 'say no to meth' poster.

Or maybe, as evidenced by its utter failure in the celebrated VoR hum test when I revisited this round, it just isn't actually very good? WHO CAN SAY?

2 x 12 (Suomi, Jacques)
2 x 0 (Win The Game, Zu Klara)

I'm going to go with horrific editing. I was astonished at the time that it did so badly but on revisiting I was AGHAST at just how bad the lighting and camera shots were. The whole first minute is essentially unwatchable!

I imagine more than a few went with the MADISON OBJECTION too of "hang on, isn't this just IDENTICAL LED TRICKERY TO LAST YEAR?". Looking back now every TOM DICK AND PAUL REY does SCREEN SORCERY, THAT DATED WELL :D

4th: Svala - Paper (133pts)

963043.jpg

Another one that wound up rather better in theory than in practice, by all accounts Svala was sort of Iceland's answer to Carola - only with more botox and bigger tits.

Brighter minds than mine have already thoroughly dissected the utterly hideous presentation of this, but suffice to say I think it had a mountain to climb anyway. It's very much Lidl-value Margaret Berger.

1 x 12 (Win The Game)
1 x 2 (Suomi)

STILL LOVE IT (in both Icelandic and English), still not ENTIRELY CONVINCED it wasn't Dinah Nah pulling a fast one with a dye job. Love the bit especially where she nails the rap verse :disco:

I was 100% sure they would say Iceland instead of Malta. Ira annoying as ever.

Or maybe, as evidenced by its utter failure in the celebrated VoR hum test when I revisited this round, it just isn't actually very good?
Definitely this. Underwhelming stage show aside, the song itself was the musical equivalent of a shelving unit - functional and present are the most enthusiastic adjectives you can apply to it.
