Chris Witty the character from Wind in the Willows and also the Chief Medical Officer mentioned yesterday about the obvious negatives of isolating (loneliness and depression). As he seems to be the man in Boris' ear right now, I suspect they're holding off for now for a mix of economic and social reasons.
 
We have as many proven cases as Italy has deaths. It's super grim over there.

I'm amazed that you're being made to go in at all. How many kids is it? Can't SLT do it all?

Ours is being done on a voluntary basis. I've volunteered and will do some days as I have no dependents and no symptoms but it's not great forcing staff to go in in this situation.
 
It seems surreal at the moment. I finish work most nights at 8.30 and there were still quite a few hanging around town, the cinema near where I work is still open at a reduced capacity and the bus I'm on is fairly busy, but everyone is keeping well apart.

My sister and mum are both working from home now for 12 weeks so if either of them get it it'll be my fault.
 
Reports from our local hospital is that everything is calm.

No reported cases in the town either. Amazing it can reach Greenland, but not north east Essex(!)

At the moment it's about 15. I think the difference between our situations might be because you work for an academy and I don't, and also maybe because you're secondary and I'm primary. We've been told there is no choice.
 
I've just caught up with Boris from today. He's treating it like Brexit. He's not quite as dangerous as Trump, but fuck me that's at the very least fucking irresponsible.
 
Picking up speed here now. 89 dead yesterday, 108 today. We really are heading towards a similar situation as Italy...

15 kids?! Then surely you only need one member of staff each day? Do the unions say there is no choice on this? That's crazy.

Maybe it is the academy thing, I don't know. But I think from what I can tell it's more just SLT to SLT making different decisions.

“Turn the tide” to me also suggests that we will only be on the decline in 12 weeks, which is the middle of bloody June. The thought of living like this week for that length of time really blows my mind.
 
Even the Queen whose statement this evening was as vapid as you'd expect and was basically an allusion to start behaving better, was more inspiring.

Maybe that's because she's significantly less of a shitcunt than the pig in a war that we have as a PM.
 
There's all these projections being thrown about by so many different people giving different dates and figures. But with something like this we do not know. However, the majority of the UK public, despite the panic buying probably do not grasp how serious of a situation we are in, and this is not going to be going away in a few months, let alone weeks.

Some of the projections say this is going to last 18 months with peaks and troughs. others say it will be done by June, others that after June there will be a 2 month drop and it will have another outbreak from September to December. I know we need to stay positive, but I think 2020 is a write off.
 
Schools and universities are FUCKED. Are they even going to be able to take a university intake in September? When all the students who are leaving this year will be on predicted grades, they will be competing for places against those who maybe took a year out and have actual results, which statistically are usually lower than predicted grades. This could be a bit unfair. If things aren't back to normal by September then we could see students paying £9,000 a year to have Skype lessons online from home.

And then what about university students in their final years? They could be awarded a degree based partially on predicted results. They said that some students in their final year would still have exams but I cannot see that happening.

I really feel for those pupils and students who will be affected by this.

I was talking to my brother who usually seems quite sensible earlier, and he was saying "oh no we'll be out of this within a month". I've no idea what the hell he's been reading.

I've not had a seminar in 6 weeks, due to the strike followed by this and I've fucking paid for this. My course is ok as it's all coursework (although at present libraries and archives are all shut). I know many that rely on exams rather than coursework. It's tough for everyone.

As for Skype/ Zoom classes. They're fine. But for me, losing that interaction with other students is an absolute killer. Having a reflective coffee or a pint after seminar or revising in groups has been an integral part of my experience.

I was doing Italian at uni, a degree level course but in the evening, once a week but I didn't go back after Christmas because of various reasons but from those who I know continued on, they have only had five classes the whole semester as the others were cancelled due to strike and then the virus. They have finally got a class on Monday via Zoom after 4 cancelled classes, and it's the last one before they have their assessments. They're basically self studying a language with no support, and they're all struggling to keep up. Some courses are fine like that but others like languages, chemistry etc are crucial to have classes.
 
My state has cancelled all SATs and PSATs. Seniors and university admissions are so screwed.
 
I'm also wondering if the OLYMPICS are gonna be cancelled if this goes on long enough.

Id feel so bad for the athletes

Tokyo and NBC will lose billions.

Can they not postpone the Olympics to 2021? (or Maybe even 2022 if it came to it)
