Relisten #5: Body Language & X (28/10/20 at 7:30pm)

Oh christ Loving Days :disco::disco::disco:

This was always my highlight and main takeaway from Body Language. Maybe less interesting than some of the stuff here but sonically it's gorgeous and the melody is stunning. This is the one major loss as a single for me - it does the whole pop-rnb thing better than "Red Blooded Woman" and adds a whole other richness to it. Just beautiful

I'm not feeling After Dark TOO MUCH, but I don't actively dislike it like I used to.

Anyway I didn't have time to join, but I re-did this one recently anyway.

I really do wish the singles campaign for Body Language had been bolder. If they'd gone a bit deeper and sold it as the quirky, offbeat album it actually is instead of throwing out desperate fare like Red Blooded Woman, it might have had more of a lifespan.

After Dark is perfectly enjoyable. Some queens do too much as per! A nice light note for the album to end on actually.

Obviously an EXTREMELY SOLID ALBUM which takes more creative risks than any of her other Parlophone records. It just lacked the commercial appeal to become a blockbuster for her. On a personal level it doesn't make me EMOTIONAL in the way Light Years and Fever do, but I really appreciate its unique place in the Kylie canon.
 
After Dark is well, it's there isn't, and not offensively so. But we were done after the last track and this was hardly going to inspire anyone to climb out of the magical well "Loving Days" threw us in. I mean, what did she leave off in favour of this? There's some choice b-sides from this era, right?

Outside of the singles, Loving Days and Sweet Music are the keepers
 
Body Language is still my favourite album. Fever is great an all, but I just fucking love the vox, the sound, the GROOVE of this album. I don't think Kylie has ever produced a record as consistent as this. It truly hangs together as a creative, left field body of work.

And from BL we go to the biggest anticlimax of her career.... X :goodgrief:

Outside of the singles EVERYTHING is a keeper.

Apart from After Dark and Red Blooded Woman on a bad day.
 
I must say, if I was to listen to that album again (I won't) I imagine a good few tracks would grow on me. I think my biggest issue was how little of it she was immediately grabbing me by the balls and screaming how good she was going to give it to me.
 
I like "After Dark" more than most but "Loving Days" would have been the perfect closer. Maybe "After Dark" could have been a bonus track for Zimbabwe or something
 
I actually love X, but I'm looking forward to rediscovering just HOW disjointed it is as an album... it really does feel like someone hit the Shuffle button on a playlist :D
