Yeah, I wonder how many of those were "curiosity" streams and how many are going to stick.
 
She's certainly got some press attention from this.

Wether that's welcome or not remains to be seen.

The take off of the Bad Boy For Life video seems to have flown over the heads of many younger than me, even with the Diddy cameo in the video. I think the video is pretty iconic and memorable for those who were around at the time but I’ve just checked and the song peaked at 33 in the US and 13 in the UK. So a hit, but by no means a massive one and not a song I see popping up at the top of “old school R&B and hip hop playlists” or club nights.

The thing is, the original video was supposed to be a bit of a tongue-in-cheek commentary on white flight to the suburbs and the reaction of those white communities to wealthy black people started joining them, which works because Diddy is a wealthy black guy! The message is slightly lost coming from Romford’s Jesy Nelson who AGAINST ALL ODDS is white.
 
My take on things - yes the song is not very good but a bit of a 'novelty hit' because of the two names.

Is she taking a lot from another culture, yes, is she very dark tanned, yes, did Xtina and others do this before, yes. Does it make it ok, probably not but there is more to it. Can we link this back to her low self esteem and trying to fit in, and her mental health, yes.

I think moopy sometimes needs to take their white keyboard warrior opinions and not be so outraged.

Oh I did a search by name and everything. Perhaps the US chart was still on yesterday when I looked.

She's lost #1 quickly in the UK (and considering the chart is a rolling 24 hour chart isn't it, just about as quickly as she could have lost it), so it will be interesting to see if it stabilises or plummets.

it's the very definition of a hype track and will probably continue to do well. The sales means radio will now support it (might have been hesitant initially) and it'll go from there.

I mean look at how popular this thread is!

I'm not convinced it'll have legs, but we're stuck with it for the next week or so.
 
I expected out of the gate success in the UK but the US thing has thrown me. Little Mix haven't charted a single there since Shout Out To My Ex (and that only got to #69).

Is an iTunes #1 really worth anything now, at least in the UK?

I suspect it doesn’t mean that much in Uruguay

Was somewhat hoping Minaj could have managed to keep going with that initial English accent as a sort of wink to the camera that she too thinks this is terrible. I mean if you're going to be obnoxious at least go all out, this hitches a ride off the P Diddy sample and nothing else.

These are all very fair points - but I also do think that the majority on here had a very reasonable point of view when she left Little Mix in that she's clearly been struggling with the nasty side-effects of fame and being in a public eye, dealing with imposter syndrome and huge insecurities.

To a certain degree, that's probably the reason why people are MORE baffled and confused, especially by the video. It's an invitation for opinions and hot takes on how she looks (and with regards to blackfishing that's been raised to her in interviews previously) - and maybe she's cool with that now. Who knows. But she hasn't been cool with it for a decade and it feels like such a calculated attention-grab that could backfire very quickly, that I'm kinda wondering about the people and management she surrounds herself with and if they have her (best) interest at heart.

I mean, it's done the trick, she's on people's radar but I feel it has come at a certain cost this early on.

what seems clear to me is that Jesy has (perhaps always) sought refuge in blackness because of her insecurities about her looks. and in an industry where blackness is repeatedly worn as a costume and then discarded, and black artists are undervalued and underinvested, both jesy and her record label capitalising on black culture and aesthetics makes a lot of people justifiably angry. it feels unjust. and it was unjust when Xtina and others did it before her, but many people didn't have the language then to discuss it, or have the spaces to make their feelings heard.
 
I do feel for her to an extent, because being only slightly ( :basil: ) older than her I do remember growing up in Liverpool and all the girls were fake tanned to the point of looking a different race. It was very much an aspirational look. The thought of looking pale skinned is probably very rough on her (already fragile) sense of self-worth because she probably equates it with looking ugly.

That being said, there's a lot more that seems to be tone-deaf about that video and her current aesthetic in general than just the tone of her skin, and she really doesn't seem like she's taking it on board at all.

it's not "black and white" but I also don't think we should excuse her because of her body image issues and other celebs blackfishing too.

she had two black or mixed bandmates. she's had every chance to listen and educate herself on why it's not okay. if she continues to present in this way she opens herself up to deserved criticism and it absolutely will hurt her in the long run, even if Boyz is a hit.
 
I hope she follows the Xtina mould with this album rollout. I want her to follow up the audacious, moral panic inducing first single with an uplifting ballad about self-acceptance.

I'm not very offended. and it's weird that instead of engaging in the discussion you resort to making me sound like a keyboard SJW.

the basic fact is that she is attempting to present as black and it's not okay. her black bandmate feels it's not okay. let's listen to black voices on this? and if you really think it's okay, fine. but to come after me for seeing and saying what's going on feels futile.

also weird when everyone else in this thread has also pointed out how obscene the blackfishing is.

She only has Uganda and Greece left at #1 on iTunes now. UK and US at #3 and #6 respectively.

Down to #19 on Spotify UK, and I THINK out of the US (and Global) top 200.

12 to 19 on spotify second day is not a bad drop at all. looks like it will debut top 15 at the least.

In terms of streaming numbers, it's down 27%. I don't follow them normally, but that struck me as not too precipitous.
