CHRISTMAS NOSTALGIA

My dad was one of those WHAT YOU’RE TEN NOW, GROW UP GET OUT AND GET A JOB! types so I was never going to be believing in Santa for very long. I can’t remember how old I was, maybe 6, when he just came out with it, Santa’s not real, you’re old enough to know :square:

I don’t have much memory of being into Father Christmas per se but generally Christmas has insanely happy memories for me and we have major nostalgia this time of year for loads of things

But yeah apart from the Santa thing.

Thanks for the therapy time moopy. Same time next week.

Liverpool used to have the most incredible department stores in the 80s. The city centre was a shithole but it has always been good for shopping. The new massive outdoor mall L1 has replaced a lot of them now sadly, but back in the day it was al about Owen Owens, Lewis’s and the greatest of them all, George Henry Lee (our version of John Lewis, same branding different name).

I can remember the toy department / grotto distinctly, it was set back from the rest of the store in a little side part, the store was so big it was a mezzanine and had loads of different areas. To get to the toy store you had to cross the stores via a little secret corridor or from the side entrance using one of those old lifts with the iron gates

It was magical. My sister and I weep for it regularly.

I think I realised when I wrote the Tooth Fairy a letter once and got a response in mum’s handwriting. Also when I got some Sylvannian Families figures in my Christmas stocking and it was a family of scary badgers without any eyes. Santa would have never given a faulty product

I remember having a MEGA TANTRUM when I found out Santa wasn't real :D All "how could they LIE?!!!?!" Histrionic, moi? :eyes:
I remember having a fight with a kid in primary school because he told the children that "santa doesn't exist". I knew he didn't exist cause I've caught my dad dressing up as santa a few years before and he had to confess everything cause I was not having it, but I was severely pissed with the kid that had to ruin it for all the other kids too.

The spawn has loads of letters from the tooth fairy. I was clever though and used to get people I worked with to write them. I only fessed up last year that a Valentine's card she'd always thought was from Joshua at primary school was actually written by one of the valeters at the Jag garage. :D

I miss the days when I had to pretend Father Christmas was real.

What always made it Christmas was going to my gran's on Christmas Eve, she'd make ham barms, pickles and cheese on cocktail sticks and a sherry trifle (yuk) and there was always Advocaat to make snowballs with. Various extended family members would pop in during the evening, usually with selection boxes and my cousin and I would be in charge of the Party Sevens in the kitchen, pouring drinks for the uncles and small sherries for the aunties.

Big family gathering round the Nan's every Christmas night. This sort of just stopped in the mid 00s as my Nan got older, I miss it and just miss those days in general. I feel like I hardly see them anymore nowadays
Oh this brings back a lot of memories. We usually spent the night before Christmas with my grandparents at their own house having a big Christmas eve dinner and then the grownups would talk and me and my grandmother would play card games and sing and dance :D. God I miss her! And on the road back to our house we would then play a little game which was to count how many Christmas trees we could see from people's windows

Just remembered another nostalgiac thing.

When spawn was little every year there'd be a children's Christmas party in the officers' club. One of the retained firemen from the village used to dress up as Santa and they'd drive him up the prison drive to the club car park on top of a fire engine with blue lights flashing playing Christmas songs through the PA system, then he'd climb down and come inside to give out presents to all the children. They used to get so excited, it was lovely.

We usually have the Rotary Club Santa drive around the villages here. He's not been around this year, which is a bit depressing.

It's like Catcher in the Rye (sleigh bells remix)
