EXACTLY. In fact I’d not be surprised if a cancer diagnosis were the trigger for this horror, generally

The cancer thing is interesting. Anyone who's had an elderly relative die of cancer knows all the signs. The accelerated onset of dementia, irrational behaviour, impulsive, confused, easily irritated...

I think everything we talk about on here barely scratches the surface of the complexity of these situations but I do wonder whether anyone actually has the right answer.

I live in Finland and we can definitely feel the European border now. We have all our basic safety questioned.

The Finnish President has met Biden and we certainly need to deepen our relationship etc. Nothing in particular that we know. Finland is known to negoriate with Russia and make business, but Putin is acting erratically, so goodbye to all that. And goodbye to all Finnish safety.
 
The BBC have bought the rights to (and renamed) a documentary called F@ck This Job that was in cinemas a couple of weeks ago. It looks at Russia's only independent news channel over the past 15ish years.
It's deffo worth a watch, and quite explicitly shows the level of control the Kremlin have over Russian media -

The article from the tweets says that Europe relies on Russian oil more than the us does which is why it takes longer to ban it

I think I was hearing on the radio that it's not just the source, but the type of oil. Not all oil is exactly the same and if your processing relies on Russian-type oil, then you can't just switch to oil from elsewhere tomorrow.
 
I'm not really sure if banning oil and gas from Russia is a good idea or not.

Russia will continue to sell their product to China and India. They won't go short of customers. It'll drive a fairly pointless spike in prices when world demand is the same and world supply is the same. Things will settle down again once new supply lines have been organised.

It'll basically mean two medium term consequences once a new world of supply chains is sorted:

- EU/UK/US will be less reliant on Russia, so they can't threaten us with that
- Russia will be less reliant on EU/UK/US, so any economic sanctions we make will matter to them much less

I can't place it as a good idea or bad idea for that reason. Short term pain, medium term... meh

In my humble opinion, and judging by how most of the existing sanctions have been bypassed by taking a shortcut through the countries that have opposed to implement them, the sanctions put a little pressure on the invader while benefit a lot economically and politically the ones who sit on the fence and hijack the situation by taking advantage of it.
 
Several analysists are saying that Russia might have misjudged the Ukrainian resistence, which means Russia will have to go a lot harder on the cities with lots of civilian casualties as a result of that. :(

Completely unrepentant. He has now said he has no regrets and would do it again. I hope they ban him for a long time.
