I think Macedonia was only ever likely to be one year - Luxembourg I think may have been heavily influenced by domestic politicians. I’m not sure the EBU ever really pushes for returns, I think Czech Republic 2015 is the only one I can remember where they made a concerted effort with talks, possibly Poland 2014 too. If anything I think they have a problem with making it too expensive for smaller broadcasters that have been pretty faithful up til now.

That works out at a budget of approximately £21k. Is that just their participation fee?

It doesn't seem like a lot of money for staging an entry, and all the other costs associated with a two-week jaunt to Malmö.

I don't think so. According to the previous budget plans they have online, their participation fee in 2019, 20, and 21 was 38,000€. In 2022, it went up to 40k.

It also shows they had a budget of around 55k for other associated costs in the first three years, but in 2022 that went up to 138k.... for what :basil:
 
Are we expecting anyone else back, other than Montenegro which has been hinted above? I suppose if they do come back and we keep the 37 from last year we’d hit 40 (:disco:) but I see Romania and potentially AUSTRALIA are seemingly still flight risks.
 
Hungary and Bulgaria (aside from that Twitter account that may or may not be official) haven’t said anything but both seem unlikely
 
Yeah I wouldn’t count on any more significant comebacks. The main questions remaining are Romania, Australia and Montenegro.

Small risk we might lose Armenia too, given they’re seemingly on the verge of being fully invaded by Azerbaijan. But unless there’s a dramatic escalation they should show up
 
I wonder if Australia will stay in on the basis that if they leave, they may not be invited back

If things go any further it’s really hard to see how it’s going to be tenable to continue allowing them to compete.

 
I’m never totally sure about the Czechs either, despite sending domestically popular artists and achieving fairly good results lately, viewing figures there are tiny and Czech TV don’t seem that bothered - it’s more a passion project of a couple of staff members.
 
They got a significant ratings boost this year so I’m not overly concerned.

I agree though, if Ahmad (current HoD) ever leaves I could well see them doing a Bulgaria and drifting away.
 
I mean Bosnia could fall apart again in the next few years so that’s probably a civil war but at least two new Eurovision entires :disco:
 
Armenia's participation in the Junior contest is apparently unsure so I guess we may not see them in Malmö, like in 2021. Fingers crossed but equally they have bigger issues :(

Armenia dropped out just from losing a big chunk of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020. They've lost the whole lot essentially now and now have to reincorporate about 120k people into Armenia proper, plus try holding off Azerbaijan from deciding to pounce for more. Expensive

I guess we face the potential of no Armenia, potentially no Azerbaijan (depending on the geopolitical winds) and maybe no Serbia (given what is happening on the Kosovo border (the latter might be a stretch).
 
It’s outrageous that Azerbaijan will likely be allowed to continue competing.
 
I think both countries will continue competing but I would not be surprised if Armenia sent a singer from Stepanakert into the mix.
 
Armenia have sent Karabakh Armenians a few times in the past, plus their first JESC winner is from there (and now an adult), if they do compete then I would guess they’ll go with another
 
That’s a shame - it feels like eastern and Central Europe is progressively less engaged. Considering where we were a few years ago, the contest seems firmly in the grip of the western nations.
 
The state broadcasters (so EBU members) in post-Communist countries tend to be poorly rated and underfunded, so the soaring costs in participation fees (e.g. Russia no longer taking part, host countries being expensive ones, general inflation) are less and less achievable for these small stations sadly :(
 
So today is the final day when countries can withdraw their application without penalty. We should have an announcement from the EBU in the next few days.

Countries still unconfirmed

  • Armenia - The recent war may force a temporary withdrawal, but I'd expect them to want to be represented.
  • Australia - I'd expect them to be back in, but apparently the broadcaster has had funding issues with it so not 100%.
  • Bulgaria - Almost certainly not coming back, but I don't think there's been an official statement so there's a small outside chance.
  • Czechia - Likely returning, last year was a success for them, but low local interest in general makes them vulnerable.
  • Montenegro - Local media reports that they're not returning, but nothing official yet from the broadcaster
  • North Macedonia - Confirmed interest in returning, but it depends if they can secure the funding.
  • Romania - Conflicting reports on whether or not they're about to withdraw. From what I can tell they've submitted a budget and it depends on whether it gets approved by the government.
Confirmed out - Andorra, Bosnia, Monaco, Slovakia

I'd be genuinely agog if Australia were out. Their ratings for cost across 12 hours of telly (given they repeat everything in the evening and get just as high ratings as the morning broadcast, if not higher) must be the best they've got for something they can guarantee ahead of time. News might be a bit higher during the biggest stories.
 
SBS (the Australian broadcaster) is a pretty niche one, they don’t have much money - their entries prior to this year were sponsored by a record label and a production company; this year by the Western Australian tourist board (!). I guess it depends on if they can get a sponsor again.

Technically Hungary and Turkey haven’t said anything either but both are unlikely due to their governments. I just hope we don’t have any semis with only 15 entries this year, it feels a bit too small to me.
