What everyday thing do you struggle with?

I hate driving and almost never do it but if something would ever happen to the car while I’m driving, I’d be absolutely clueless about what to do

I am so fucking SHIT at doing housework. Mr K does pretty much all of the cleaning apart from the dishes but I do all the shopping and bills and sorting out the utliites etc. Not sure if that is a fair trade off but it has worked for us for 20 odd years.

I just wear short sleeve shirts to work and hope that the creases have fallen :shy:
This reminds me of another thing I'm not good at - wearing clothes.

I mean obviously I do wear them, but there are loads of things I won't wear. Short sleeve formal shirts. T-shirts with a heavy print on them. Any shirt without a t-shirt underneath. Shorts. I'm sure there are others.

I cannot STAND wearing a shirt with a T-Shirt underneath, it just feels very claustrophobic!

My worst thing is slim or skinny fit jeans, although I am fairly average sized, my legs are chunky and they don’t work. Come to think of it, I hate relaxed and baggy fit ones too, it has to be regular fit or not at all.

I'm reasonably chunky of thigh but I can do (and prefer) slim. I couldn't get into skinny fit though.

But I'm about two decades too old for skinny fit anyway, so no great loss.

@lolly, are you neurodivergent?

I'm so with @Iguana on finding it near-impossible to get out of the house of a morning. I know a lot of people just think chronically tardy people are rude and/or lazy, but after three decades of constantly running late for school/lectures/work literally every day, I cannot begin to describe the positive impact the rise of flexible working has had on my mental health.

Saying hello to people when approaching from afar. When do you look up? Do you look down until a certain point? Do you get your phone out? Or just stare the whole time until about 5 metres away? Hate it.
Jesus, ABSOLUTELY this.

Also, when you see someone you barely know and you think you'll just say hello as they walk past but then they slow down and actually talk to you. I can't do small talk AT ALL, so feeling obligated to make it even for 30 seconds is far beyond my mental pay grade.

My default is to have headphones on, even if not listening to music, and then just look people squarely in the eye, smile, but don't stop even if they do slow down.

Always assuming I don't spot them from a mile off first and cross the road to avoid them in the first place, of course.

Also, and entirely dyspraxia related, keeping any area I'm inhabiting tidy. My desk at work has become a running joke and sometimes as I'm sitting back down I go 'what the FUCK has happened here?'. I can tidy it and bin a load of stuff but within minutes it's a tip again.

Oh small talk. Yes that’s the one. Fucking dreadful invention.

Polite chatter with people you once knew is one thing - a waste of energy yes but I can make it work and fake it out of politeness, I can accept if they’re more into the moment than I am.

But small talk at work, or in work environments, dear Christ. That moment when you know you’ve been cornered by a complete stranger who has decided to spend the next ten minutes reeling off questions like “what do you do” and “oh do you know Tom Smith he worked in your legal department in 2003” and the inevitable “let’s grab a coffee some time” knowing full well you’ll never set eyes on each other again…

I just HATE wasted energy. Some people just have no problem expelling it.

If i ever have to go to a networking event or conference I find the one person I know and never leave their side.

We had one of these last week which was supposed to encourage interaction between different delivery partners for the scheme I'm working on. Except there's literally no benefit to having a relationship with the other delivery partners so I didn't speak to anyone outside of the offices I work for.
And I stood outside smoking for the entirety of the horrible group activities they'd arranged. I know enforced fun isn't exactly an everyday thing, but I struggle with it nonetheless.

Proud finger clicker, but can't whistle for shit, except one note on an inhale.

I was with a group of people this week and funny enough the subject of the above ‘talents’ came up in conversation and I was surprised by how many people can’t raise one eyebrow / roll their tongue / click their fingers etc.

I can do all. And I can whistle a whole song.

I really should be famous or something.

Oh but actually I’ve never figured out how to wolf whistle (with fingers).

This must explain why I’m not famous.

These are all quite interesting, I definitely relate to some of these.
Definitely the phone call thing, and carrying a conversation without pausing to think for my response. Also speaking so others can actually hear the whole sentence. (I sometimes mix up the volume that I should speak at, usually a bit quiet or randomly loud out of nowhere.) 😅

I noticed that I am less competent at home than at uni, where I have to do most things for myself. (Though cooking is minimal - I can cook rice, vegetables, fry an egg, fish, perhaps do a curry, but it's way easier and tastier having food boxes to defrost of meals cooked by my parents at home.) 🤗

My attention span has become particularly abysmal. I miss being able to sit and read for hours.
Same, and I used to read loads more books in primary school, even some longer ones like the first 3 Harry Potter books (then stopped at Goblet of Fire because it looked more like a whole dictionary) 😅 and kind of stopped reading long fiction books in highschool, plus the typical young adult stories aren't interesting to me, I end up reading a bit and just stop. I might resume with some more preferable genres; I'm sticking to non-fiction and bioscience things for now. :D👩🏻‍🔬
I'd actually love any advice on this.
I'd say start with noticing if you're actually still reading a lot, where it's not physical books - e.g. I do read on the computer or phone, plus my written notes from lectures – perhaps start with reading around topics or genres of interest, and build up time from there. 😊
We had proper ties at school so its embeded in my memory.
Same, in highschool (though that wasn't long ago for me 😄) and for some violin group concerts out of school.

I can't drive. I regulate drivers and know everything about the DVLA, the history of licences around Europe and what each and every code means, with all the key dates over what changed and when. Never driven.
I know a bit about the standard UK number plate system and how it was a bit different before 51 plates of late 2001, but still haven't done the theory or practical tests.
The thing is I have driven quite a few times since I got a provisional license, and can do the basics easily, but I'm no good at booking things in advance. Then again it was lockdown when I was intending to get lessons. Now students in my sisters' years (sixth form/college) are getting their full licences already. :eyes:

Hair is just ridiculously time-consuming to do anything interesting with it on a daily basis.
Similar; my hair's naturally curly, and it looks brilliant just after washing, but 2 days later it is all frizzy (and I wash my hair less often than that. 😅) It would be interesting to get short hair but it'll probably end up more like an afro than a neat Enya-ish style ☺️

*Also time keeping, sometimes. (I took much longer than expected with this reply 😆)
Things like I'll get up earlier than everyone and still end up leaving the room a bit late 😅 wondering and wandering around.

My neighbour literally did this to me yesterday. Beyond the face that we both live on the same street I know NOTHING about her so had absolutely nothing to bat back with other than ‘the weather’s letting us down’

In keeping with this sort of thing, I have never worked out how people make fart noises with their armpit. And also can't whistle.
My dad could do the fart noise with his hands grasped together. I tried for years to do it, even with him showing me and trying to position my hands, never managed it though.

I used to be able to do a fair approximation of a one-note whistle but since my recent dental problems I can't whistle at all.

I have no sense of direction to the point where I can't remember which direction to walk in after weeks of being in an office.

I can't use a corkscrew to open wine.

I can't parallel park.

Mr L is like this. If I'm with him I'll sometimes purposely hold back to see what way he chooses, rather than letting him follow me.

Can you follow maps?

My boyfriend does the same thing. He'll hold back and see where I end up. And I'll go on drives and insist on not using maps, which annoys him, but it's good for me to work it out. It just might take an extra hour.

I can use Google Maps if I have it on the view where it's angled in your direction. The 'Start now' option. I struggle with a standard map.

My driving instructor used to tell me that I just wasn't making an effort to pay attention to the directions when I mentioned it, but in the end conceded that I had the worst sense of direction he'd ever seen and he was worried for me going travelling by myself. :D
