Old TOTP (BBC4)

Oh my God, Forever Love. Surely in the top ten most boring number one hits of all time?
Absolute pig cancer. Howled at the LIGHT SWAYING among the crowd.

Also Robbie really was looking like Blur and Oasis merged into one man during Freedom. Stacking on a bit of timber kind of worked for him, I have to say. (clearly starting a pub crawl before that performance, on the other hand, didn't)

There's never a bad to time to have some Julian Cope. Shame he gave up doing telly altogether.

Sean Maguire truly was the Dida Ritz of 90s pop. Who was bankrolling this seemingly endless string of #13-#27 hits?

OMC's How Bizarre feel like the purest kind of one hit wonder. Who'd even be the modern equivalent? GAYLE?

What was Alanis Morrisette's only top ten hit from the Jagged Little Pill album is a GREAT pub quiz question. (If your players are aged over 35 on average)

I Am I Feel :disco:

I know one of them has Kylie money now (and to a lesser extent, Amy Studt money), but the fact that Alisha's Attic never had a top ten hit is one of the great pop injustices.

Oh God the SISTERS GRIMM screaming through the terminally boring Someday with ERIC CLAPTON on guitar! What a confluence of HATE. :zombie:

Mad that The Macarena was never a UK #1. Obviously supremely unlucky to end up stuck behind the Spice Girls, but still...

I ran to Wiki to check this, I didn't know this! and it was the 5th single off the album, what gives? The CD single release could pass by a Live EP these days.

Jagged was quite a slow burn in the UK. The singles charted progressively higher up to Head Over Feet.

I reckon it’s the fourth best-remembered of the singles at best even over here by this point.

#22 You Oughta Know
#26 Hand In My Pocket
#22 You Learn
#11 Ironic
#8 Head Over Feet
#59 All I Really Want

Totally forgotten in between One & One and Believe, but I really do love Cher's cover of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.

Didn't the guy from Kula Shaker turn out to be a Nazi?

Govinda is a problematic fave but this Hey Dude one is awful.

I presume Twitter has already made all the jokes about OMD and OMC appearing on the same episode...

I think Spinning The Wheel was a bit too subtle/boring for me at the time, but it's obviously aged well. Very classy.

I really do have a visceral loathing of Paul Weller. So staid, boring and pub-rocky. I bet he was one of those who thought the Spice Girls heralded the end times.

As I recall Crispin Mills (son of Hayley) heavily alluded to enjoying Nazi imagery, probably justifying the origin of the swastika. I think he got over it though. Just because Bowie did it, doesn't mean it's cool.

Terrible band.

Spinning the Wheel was drop dead gorgeous, in remixed and original form. George was such a mid 90s chart force.

Very much in my summer/autumn when I left school and started Sixth Form. Have we had the Smurfs yet?

Nice to see Jo Whiley was always CLUELESS

Yes let's all snuggle up and slow dance to SPINNING THE WHEEL, a song about your FAITHLESS PARTNER giving you the AIDS

I wished she wasn't GRINNING HAPPILY all the way through it though :nononono: like babes have you even listened to the words you're singing?

She can't be expected to change her facial expression AND very slowly sway from side to side!

Why was one of 3T carrying a rucksack around with him throughout the video? We decided it must have been Uncle Michael's Noncing Kit.

And those two young lovelies dancing behind her. It was just totally off.

Also noted how Jo Whiley looks basically the same 28 years later whereas Lamacq NOT SO MUCH. And he was never an attractive man.

That 3T/Michael Jackson video always used to freak me out as a kid. His face work had really gone off the rails at that point, and the ultra-white lighting made him look like a vague child's scribble of a face drawn onto a paper plate.

BRING BACK JULIAN COPE AND BEAR VAN BEERS

Your wish has been granted :disco: (Bit behind so watching the second episode from last week - 23/08/96)

Ant & Dec back with another utterly forgotten slice of ABSOLUTE DRECK :D. I see they've dropped the PJ & Duncan name now - had they started on SMTV by this point?

E-Bow The Letter - incredible song. Went right over my head at the time of course, but their 2003 best-of was rarely off my walkman back when I was a moody 17 year old.

Was it ever proven that Donna Lewis *wasn't* Ellie Goulding's aunt?

Gorgeous, gorgeous song.
