What are you reading? (2025)

I've just finished East Of Eden by John Steinbeck and I can't remember the last time a book struck a chord with me so deeply. I loved it.
 
Janice Hallett is the AGATHA of this generation. Every book so far has been unique, full of unexpected twists & turns, innovative & funny. Got through this new one in 2 days & already excited for what she comes up with next.

Well I only just read Less Than Zero for the first time (I KNOW I KNOW) and now I'm in a B.E.E. black hole. I think our SHIRL was on one of those not so long ago.

Annieways, of course I've read The Rules of Attraction and American Psycho (I'm not an ANIMAL) and I recently hate-read The Shards.

But now I need to complete his bibliography.

So it happens that tonight's choice is Lunar Park. It's supposed to be science/meta fiction-y. So I'm curious as to how he will incorporate his usual degenerates into it!

I couldn’t finish Lunar Park :( Glamorama was a wild ride though.

You should check out The Informers. Probably my favourite of his.
 
I might try the audiobook of Lunar Park if the paperback proves to be a chore

I just finished this and wow... I think it's my favourite book of his. Absolute masterpiece!
 
I just love how he intertwined autobiography with horror fiction. I never thought he was even capable of that; but that is more on me I suppose than him as an author.

Glamorama next in my B.E.E. rabbit hole.

Yes, for me self narrated celebrity autobiographies is the best use of the format. And I fully expect hers to be a pinnacle of the genre.
 
I still haven’t listened to the Parker Posey audiobook….. must remember that’s there (somewhere)
 
I've now fallen into an Adrian Mole hole and am onto the Prostrate years. It feels like revisiting an old, whiney friend.

Pauline Mole remains an icon.

Just finished a really good book and all anyone can talk about is how one of the characters took a cat she'd been landed with to an animal rescue place AND THAT MADE HER SUCH AN AWFUL PERSON IT RUINED THE WHOLE BOOK FOR ME

I love my book club but really struggle to hold my tongue during the 'everyone say how you felt' section when half the group says 'I HATED this book because this one character was unlikeable'.

Then invariably they all vote for some cosy inoffensive book the next month because they want something nice, only to hate that because it is boring or bland.

Thus the cycle inevitably continues.

Characters should be doing and feeling things that make us uncomfortable!
 
I do think there are some times when a character can be unlikeable in a way that makes things worse for the reader.

I'm usually absolutely fine with 'unlikeable' characters but there was something about Mr Loverman that made it an absolute slog to read, and I remember shredding the book at book club because of it
 
And yes I gave up on my book club a few years ago
It was just all so predictable and “wholesome”

I loved that book!

I murdered mine with a Murakami book - can't remember which one but one of the loud ones described a surreal sex scene in it as 'the most disgusting thing I have ever read.'
