My quick review of Haute Couture S/S 2026. HQ images for best detail
The Highlights (just the one actually)
Schiaparelli
Daniel Roseberry has such an American sensibility when he approaches couture. He designs for celebrity and spectacle, to the point of ostent and even camp; and technique seems to matter most to him when it's external and visible. While many have scoffed at it, I think there's always room for that mentality in fashion - and it's especially fitting for a house like Schiaparelli. It's good to showcase the intricate work human hands can do and what kind of fantasy we can create. Because the construction is immaculate and the embroidery is so intricate it could function as a separate piece on its own.
The Midlights
Christian Dior
Johnathan Anderson is NOT someone I've ever stanned. His work at Loewe was fantastic, but since his appointment at Dior he's not shown much understanding of its DNA or its customer. His work has thus far been clunky and heavy. This collection seems to be somewhat of a correction. There was a lightness that wasn't there before, even WITH some really structured pieces. The way the fabric has been literally hand-engineered to curve with the boning is crazy levels of talent. Also, John Galliano attended

Honorable Mentions:
Armani Prive - Very much an "all systems check" collection. I love that she hasn't fallen into the trap of trying to 'interpret' Giorgio with 'her own vision' - she is his niece after all. Gorgeous and impeccable, but otherwise nothing to report.
Valentino - Apart from the silly set, it had some really outstanding pieces.
Throw it away:
Chanel - That STATE of it! Dowdy and awkward. It's embarrassing just how wrong Blazy is for a house of this complexity and stature.
Viktor & Rolf - Juvenile

I’ve been working in fashion for more than 20 years but somehow just can’t seem to muster the same interest and excitement I used to. It feels like everything is about red carpet and celebrities and big conglomerates, whereas I was always more interested in real clothes ( My first job was at Margiela with Martin). Fashion just feels completely removed from reality now, just clickbait and IG fodder to sell hoodies and baseball caps.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just a passing phase ..that said the Schiaparelli Margot Robbie looks incredible

It's not just you. The industry reached its full maturation somewhere around 10 years ago and the establishment has solidified. And ultimately, because high fashion is an elite sport, it's rife with establishment politics. Legacy houses have become publicly traded shareholder cash cows, failure or diverging away from the norm is MUCH less tolerated (which is why they're much more likely to revive a heritage house rather than incubate new talent), and designers are now celebrities with PR obligations.
It definitely wasn't like that 20 years ago. Fashion used be to more playful and weird. Social media has watered that down a lot. And I hate the way the Creative Director have effectively been turned into middle management. Which is why we see them play musical chairs all the time. I miss designers like Alber Elbaz (RIP) and Olivier Theyskens who knew how to differentiate themselves. Nobody will touch Olivier now.

so true! We are all hoping that the tide will turn but I’m not sure it’s possible.. at the same time change is the only constant in Fashion, maybe people will grow tired of the current state.

Yes, I worked there in the 90s when it was still a very small company… I’ve since worked for a few others and have my own collection. I’ve always been obsessed with fashion ( and music!) which is why my current disenchantment with the whole thing is so weird for me
