sadly I missed Serena's match and for some reason was surprised to see that she lost. I'd tricked myself into thinking she would win this with no singles matches under her belt. hopefully taking a set is a good omen for continuing to play.

but Wawrinka vs Berrettini? wow. I'm emotional for Stan.

I expected her to be more competitive than Venus is.

I wonder if they'll both be at the US Open.
That second set basically took it out of her. I just don't think it was ever a realistic proposition.

My guess is she did it to promote whichever brand of fat loss injections she seems to be flogging.

I really hope the overall response and narrative is less cynical than this.

Surely I can't be the only one to think that it felt more like a novelty wildcard? Aside from the murmurs late last year that she was considering some kind of return there had been no indication prior to that that she had even a remote interest in returning to the game.

Also why the fuck have the BBC not employed Venus in punditry duties?. Instead they've gone for Genie Bouchard of all people :zombie:

And meanwhile they've just bunged the far better Laura Robson in a roving court reporter role which is a bit of a copy and paste of what they do on TNT.

Naomi is playing SO well. those serve percentages... I think she'll be much more competitive against Sabalenka in round 4 this time.

Serena also skipped the post match press conference last night but it seems she's going to escape the penalty for that. Ok.

one thing I haven't missed during Serena's absence? people who don't like her banging on about how much they don't like her...

it's a real LOUD minority

There's nothing wrong with expressing dislike. I dislike Novak Djokovic equally as much. More even!

we know, you say it often!

Ostapenko 6-2 6-0. the girls are shaking. I'm sure Iga will be happy to see her in the other half of the draw...

The Beeb should replace Bouchard with Venus now.
Venus has way more of a love of the game than Serena. I don't think she's ever been close to many players off the court, but she knows everyone's games, she follows results, she's as up on tour gossip as anyone. I can totally imagine sitting with Venus to watch a couple of lesser known players slug it out on court for fun.

I saw some of her appearances on the US coverage of Roland Garros and I thought she was wonderful. She had great insight and came across so well.

Eugenie Bouchard is just bland. Her tennis was decidedly average too - and her commentating skills are no better.

Oooh I don't know who I'd rather win out of Sabalenka and Naomi. I guess it would be nice for Sabalenka to reach her first Wimbledon final.

neither of them will reach the final because they're in jpeg's half so :eyes:

Laura Robson is really good but very young so she'll be more and more involved in the years to come I'm sure.

Also whoever is in charge of the coverage clearly doesn't have a clue :zombie:

:D Maybe they think that all social media engagement is good, despite the fact that if you search for “Andrew Castle” at any given moment, it brings up 90%+ negative opinions.

Kind of lol’ing (unless she proves me wrong) at qualifier Kostovic saying “let’s see if she can handle my power” about her match with Sabalenka. Teodora’s behaviour is “a lot” on the ITF circuit - I wonder if Centre court will make her more timid.
I may have no choice but to stan this one.

Sinner wins both tie breakers. It must be so demoralising losing two tie breakers. Poor Borges.

Gauff is in trouble. Sierra serving at 4-3 and a break up in the decider

Coco fought for her LIFE to snatch that tiebreak. she played a defensive point at 7-7 so good it really must be seen to be believed

Coco won, but despite her breakthrough coming at Wimbledon, grass is clearly her weakest surface.

J-PEG is an a tiebreak against Sara SOMUGNES-LOLNO, who you might think would be shit on this surface, but she often uses the slice on grass to great effect.
