There's speculation that he dropped the 'delay the election' bomb to take headlines away from the economy, where the GDP has taken the largest hit since records began. :eyes:

I can't believe the conspiracists have appropriated the hanky code. Is nothing sacred?

A very popular choice going by, what else, Twitter

her campaign was an unmitigated DISASTER so I see no evidence that she's personally popular or has any ability to motivate voters - an awful choice

Social media sitedoes seem to be split into either "Yaaas Kween Kamala" or "racist bitch gonna hand the victory to Trump!"

The more I think about it the more I think it doesn't really matter any more - everything is in such a weird state at the moment due to the virus and how the US is handling it, they probably could have picked just about anyone and it wouldn't really move anything either way (in an ordinary election I'd agree with @Jark though - Harris was a particularly unpopular candidate, doing worse in her home state than Andrew Yang among others).

Who CARES? She's up to the job of President (which, ultimately, is the important thing about the role) and Biden already has a pretty generous lead in a race with not all that many undecided voters. There are more important considerations than necessarily being able to excite voters when your campaign's in that position, not least because most voters don't vote on the basis of 'excitement' at all.

I think Biden-Harris is a great ticket. Harris is an excellent debater and the first Black and South Asian woman to be selected as a VP candidate. Given that she is an elected senator, she's clearly popular with someone.

The impact of the VP pick on swaying voters is grossly overstated and harks back to the 1960 election when Kennedy selected Lyndon B. Johnson to win support in the South. There is little evidence since then to suggest that the VP has been a vote winner.

I think the tough-on-crime background of the ticket is probably a good idea electorally, but it's going to be very funny to watch them pretend that their records are actually the opposite of that.

The most important consideration is filling the power vacuum after Biden retires. Aside from my personal feelings about Harris (Tulsi was totally right, she's a phony), choosing her is a good representation of what partisan Democrats want. Radical intersectionalism on social issues, triangulation on everything else.

What the Democrats really needed on the ticket was an AVOWED SOCIALIST. Someone who would preach to the converted minority and be really UNAPPEALING to those centrists, swing voters and moderate Republicans that usually DECIDE elections. :eyes:

There was huge appetite née pressure for an African American female politician to be selected as the Democrat VP and Harris was one of the most high profile in consideraton. Having stood for the Democratic nomination, she's undergone the sort of national scrutiny that most of the others hadn't. Her background cuts through Trump's law and order tripe, that Democrats are soft on crime. It also makes it harder for the Republicans to present Biden as being led by the radical left. No one who was in consideration was perfect - each one had their own weaknesses which would be exploited to the fullest by the Trump campaign.

In the long run, whether or not she appeals to voters is irrelevant - it's Biden v Trump in November not Harris v Pence.

Well if her appeal is irrelevant then by that measure his choice is irrelevant. But it's not. We know his VP is essentially the next President and that's something voters will consider. and considering nobody even wanted her as the Dem candidate why would anyone be warm on the idea of her as the next President? Make it make sense.

I don't think anyone expected Bernie to be picked as VP, if that's what you mean. But if I were choosing someone to win moderate voters, my first choice wouldn't be a senator from one of the bluest states in America. Harris is a literal coastal elite.

The appetite for a black woman VP was also coming from a converted, progressive minority. A few months ago, Harris supporters were the same people baptising Biden as politically black and talking up how black people single-handedly won him the nomination. They were never not going to vote Democrat. It's just that they have stronger institutional support and media presence than the handful of avowed socialists in the party.

I agree with your last line though. The VP doesn't really matter for this election. The Democrats are telegraphing who they want voters to back in 2024.

I don't know why Moopy thinks that Harris is such a centrist. The Republican Party are insisting that she's somewhere to the left of Mao Tse Tung and they wouldn't lie to us.

Personally I struggle to think of a better candidate than Harris to win over the moderates. She may be a liberal elite, but you'd have to work very hard to pin her as some kind of socialist firebrand. All the stuff she's getting dragged for on social media is a lot of the very same stuff that will probably allow wavering blue collar voters to (begrudgingly) put their trust in the Biden/Harris ticket. Somebody further to the left could have actually done a lot more harm than good at this stage.

Her nomination defangs virtually all of Trump's tried and tested means of attack (as did Biden's win over Bernie, incidentally. Covid would have hit Trump hard either way, but I think he would've gotten a lot more mileage out of the 'it's me or socialist chaos' dog whistles than he has from ludicrously trying to paint that on Biden).

I do have concerns as to whether Harris will be have the appeal to win an election under her own steam should she have to, but fuck it. If the objective is to get Trump out by any means necessary and take it from there, I'd say the Biden campaign is making some very smart decisions.

It makes me recoil to put myself in that headspace but I probably would've chosen an actual moderate like Klobuchar. She has won in a much more competitive state than California. The Twitter draggings don't really matter, nearly all of the people doing the dragging will still vote for Biden. The only person rumoured who I think would have seriously harmed the campaign is Warren, who is the personification of the liberal elite.

Like what happened to Bernie, Trump's 2020 campaign has been reclaimed by the party machine. He won in 2016 because Bannon worked out a more effective attack than calling Democrats socialists (pointing out their blatant corruption and recent failures in office). This time around, the Republican campaign is being ran by idiots from Fox News and party apparatchiks, which is why the big enemy is socialism and cancel culture. It's so lazy.

The smartest decisions the Biden campaign has made are keeping him away from the media and ignoring the progressives. It wouldn't have worked without the pandemic and five years of feverish Trump coverage, but if you're 10+ points ahead in polling without promising any real change, then it makes sense. Ultimately, there's not much difference between leftists complaining on Twitter and loyal Democrats if they both end up voting for you.

I agree about Klobuchar. I was a massive fan from the very beginning. But I think I'm a moderate at heart, and I'm not sure if that's what America needs. It's all so confusing.
