Rumours last week suggested he was going to stand down in January anyway. And then we’ll get DISHY RISHI and have another period of ENDLESS GLOOM to look forward to.

The fact that Sunak is popular because he gave everyone some vouchers for a cheap meal when he has co-signed on all these horrific Tory policies is... well, what can you say really.

To be fair Sunak’s popular mainly because of the furlough scheme is he not?

Not just co-signed either, it seems like he's been the driving force behind a lot of the more disastrous decisions to not follow SAGE advice, presumably in an attempt to not have to keep paying furlough and to buoy up the economy.

Doesn't seem to have worked very well :D

If they wanted to rally rub it in, they'd go for Patel who is even more racist than the average gammon. But her absolute uselessness when she's ever asked to speak in public likely precludes that.
 
Didn’t they extend the furlough scheme till the end of April the other week? I think that gives us an idea of how long they’re expecting this to go on till.

To be fair it was expected to end in October wasnt it? :D

No doubt it’ll get extended until the summer in a few weeks.
 
My Christmas plans were to travel to Somerset with my parents to stay with my sister for the five days of relaxed rules, which is obviously not allowed anymore. My sister has just announced that she doesn't care about the rules and that we should come down anyway and my parents, both in their seventies, appear to be convinced by this. I am aware that there is very little chance that any of us has the virus. I'm in a support bubble with my parents and none of us have seen anyone else for a good couple of months. My sister usually has to go to work but has had two negative tests in the last week and has been working from home since then. All of these plans were put in place so that we could feel safe meeting up under the old rules and we had never intended to use hospitality or do anything else which might spread the virus whilst down there.

My parents are now well advanced in their plans to travel down anyway but I'm really not sure that I'm comfortable with it. It's clearly against the rules, which I have followed pretty much without exception for nine months now, even if the actual risk is negligible and we're not meant to decide which rules should and shouldn't apply to us. If I say that we shouldn't go, either my parents will go anyway, leaving me to spend Christmas on my own here or they'll agree not to go, meaning that my sister is on her own in Somerset and is probably quite pissed off with me. Either way, saying that I think we should follow the rules will ruin everyone's Christmas. I genuinely don't know whether I should just keep my mouth shut and have a nice time, which will almost certainly be safe. If I do keep quiet, I've spent a lot of time criticising Dominic Cummings for ignoring the rules when it suited him and I'll just be another hypocrite who says one thing and does another.

I don't think there actually is a solution here and it just makes me angry at the government for putting us all in this position.

Exactly. Decisions like yours about what to do at Xmas were made weeks ago. The government had every opportunity to take action and didn't because it was more important to Johnson that he was The Man Who Saved Christmas than to to be The Man Who Saved Lives. There is no satisfactory answer to the situation you're in because you weren't given the right information to make a proper informed choice in the first instance.
 
I see most of Europe are stopping flights from the UK now. Are we the new ground zero?

Pretty sure we're not the only country with a mutated strain, it's just been discovered here. But then what do I know?
 
I also saw the anti-mask protest on the High Street yesterday. All 15 of them out of a town of 200k people.
 
I know I'm late the party and am lucky enough to somehow be still in Tier 2, but the whole reduced Christmas is really stressful and upsetting.

Christmas Eve is for our family the main event. We're still going ahead, but highly reduced. My father is struggling to accept it. Mr Ag's mental state right now is desperately vulnerable and his mother telling him to decide between Xmas Day and Boxing Day has put him in a very bad way.

I'm struggling to deal with all of this. There's a permanent knot in my stomach.

That really sucks, you literally can’t do right for doing wrong in that situation and it’s all because of the cuntwits in charge being incapable of making a decision. My only question would be whether, if you do go, you’d feel comfortable at all while you’re there.

I think I'd feel safe there. The risk from the virus should be negligible, because that's exactly how we had planned it to be. My problem is that I'm a rule follower by nature and I'm not happy ignoring the rules, even poorly thought out ones like these. If the biggest downside is me feeling like a terrible hypocrite, I'm fairly sure that I'll just have to suck it up.
 
I'm so behind with all this. I presume NYE is cancelled (literally don't care about that).
 
So basically, only England not yet going into a national lockdown. I think some of the more remote parts of Scotland are Tier 3.
 
Christ they're deploying police to railway stations to stop people travelling without permit. How unfeasibly draconian.
 
Nah you know how Boris works. Everyone else will be going into lockdown, he'll be saying how great everyone's common sense is and that the tier system is more than sufficient until doing a sudden u-turn and locking us down with 24 hours notice 2 weeks into January on a Saturday.

Compliance is the problem now - at Tesco the other day 50% were wearing masks at most, no one was even trying to keep distance, people leaning over you to grab things etc. No one cares any more, especially when they know the rules are just effectively suggestions, and you have the usual "ignorant December shopper syndrome" on top of that
 
I'd still say 90% of adults are wearing masks in shops or on buses here. It's very much a minority who don't.

I agree that it's pretty much a free for all otherwise though, with little distancing, following guided routes or waiting for people to move on. I had to wait to get in the small M&S foodhall yesterday, but other than that it's clear that supermarkets are just letting too many people in.

If the new strain is that fucking contagious and the airports are still operating like it’s Bank Holiday weekend and everyone welcome (because money) then it’s a bit fucking late to be closing the borders now. You’ve all had a bit of it, enjoy!
 
I imagine the supermarkets in tier 4 must be ridiculous now, full of people desperately trying to find Christmas presents now they have precious little alternative.
