This is the thing I'm most fucked off about. These decisions have massive repercussions for our mental health and livelihoods, and yet they continue to make promises and proclamations which they then have to retract. I have claimants at work who run pubs; speaking to them week on week and hearing how increasingly despondent they are is awful, especially after they've been allowed to hope they'll be able to open and are then get told otherwise at the last minute. The government have catastrophically fucked up their approach to the whole thing.

That was just outright snide of them. This is the sort of thing I'm referring to - there should have been clear guidance about what will happen for major events, not some cobbled-together emergency plan spunked out hours before it takes effect.
 
My mum is heartbroken. My two brothers were meant to come over for her birthday and Christmas, she hasn't seen them for months. One of them is now in tier 4. We're all worried about his mental health as he's really struggled recently.

At what point does people's mental health and wellbeing become as important as not spreading covid?
 
Whilst we should indeed be having a go at the government and not each other, I also hope that any Southerners who spent the latter part of the summer going on about how Northerners are 'selfish' and 'just don't know how to follow the rules' have a really miserable Christmas.

I don’t really know of anyone who said that. Mostly the discussions were pure bafflement over why the rates in the north were so different to the south at the time. It didn’t make any sense.

I have no doubt that it's a tiny number of people, but at least some of the awful callers on the Jeremy Vine radio show tried to make exactly that argument.

As above, callers into the Jeremy Vine radio show. I wouldn't normally listen because it's basically designed to identify terrible people, but when the alternative is getting on with my work...

I have Radio 2 on a lot when I’m working in the week and that’s usually the time of day I get angry at callers and switch to my own music.

In all honesty, I’ve seen far more northerners take so much glee in seeing London going into Tier 3 this week.
 
You can tell how much the government are trying to get the public to blame one another. My mum blamed it on all the shoppers on Regent Street! :eyes:
 
My Mum was MOUTHING OFF about Regent St. because of some pictures she saw in the press, when I was last there it was DEAD!

I went to Regent Street in August once this year for a click & collect item and it was completely dead. My flat mate was there last week as she had a hospital appointment at UCH so just popped into one of her fav shops on the way back and it was the same.
 
I had a customer comment the other day about how my work high street was so much busier than Oxford/ Regent Street
 
I'm gutted for many of you. It's not necessarily what you ended up with, it's how you ended up with it. Having something dangled in front of you like a carrot, only for it to be snatched away at the last exit is brutal.

Our numbers are soaring above 30,000 per day now, and I'm growing more and more uneasy with the idea of my parents wanting to come and visit for 3 or 4 days over Christmas. Personally, I know I'd get through Christmas on my own no problem after everything else life has thrown at me these past 12 months. But I'm not sure my parents, particularly my mum, could be convinced to stay at home. I've only seen them for 4 days this year, they couldn't come to visit when I spent an eternity hospitalised this summer, so there's still a really dumb leftovers plate with unfounded guilt, helplessness, and frustration on the table.

I had to tell my mum to take the Monday off work, so we all can isolate for 5 days before they drive here. I told her I'm getting a COVID-Test on Monday to be sure I'm good (no acknowledgment of that either way), she tells me they're going to the town hall to pick up their new passports on Monday. Like that cannot fucking WAIT for another month. I had to bite my tongue. so I wouldn't lose my shit on the phone. I'm this close to booking them an appointment at their local test centre, and tell them "take a test or don't come".

It's all incredibly frustrating and a really dumb situation.
 
There were pictures last week of a huge crowd of Irish travellers gathered outside Harrods, which has been twisted to represent Christmas shoppers in any given street in Central London. :DAF:
 
Perhaps I just don't pay that much attention to it or I've just tuned the wankers out, but I haven't seen that much sniping either way.
 
My council are doing free walk-in testing this week. Assuming that’s still happening after today’s announcement, I’m going to see if I can get one on Tuesday.

THIS. Although London really HAS had an easy ride, considering... but many of us have been largely compliant. I certainly didn’t relish in northerners being in lockdown.

I called my mum after the announcement today and said I couldn't come round on Christmas day. I expected her to try and talk me into going anyway but I am glad she didn't as that would have just made it worse.

I have been known to say in the past that my birthday is the same every year... well not this time. I'll just finally take the hint to be eternally 39 in true Sinitta style :disco:

I know there are people who are on their own every year, and people who may be on their own this year because they've someone in hospital or already have lost someone. Reading this thread and seeing other people's situations (especially @MARY) has helped shake me out of my little sulk too.

Naturally still pissed off at the Johnson shitshow.

Not going to lie - very glad that I already opted for Crizzy with the flatmate’s before this. But I was due to see one of my best friends in Oxford on Boxing Day.
 
Quite, it's an emotional time and people are going to make impulsive and irrational decisions when you introduce a lockdown with 8 hours notice less than a week before Christmas. Especially when you announce it the day after most people have finshed work for the year!
 
Also on my train last week you couldn't board without a reservation and half the seats were left empty, have the train companies just thrown that out of the window tonight to make as much money as possible?

Never mind the fact that your laptop in your mum's spare room is as good an office as any for those who haven't.
 
Of course the train companies have been shafted ALSO and will be dealing with thousands of people trying to get refunds tomorrow, it's just such a MESS every way you look at it.

Anyone would think we’ve had governments obsessed with pitting people against each other constantly. The decision to put London into Tier 2 after lockdown was really wrong and fuelled a lot of resentment I think.
People need to remember who the villains are though
