"I'll Remember", "Take a Bow" and "You'll See" were massive in America. Bedtime Stories did outsell Erotica here, by about 50%, yes. Relative to the competition, though, she probably was criticized for underperforming at this time compared to Whitney, Mariah, Celine, but there's a spectrum. It's not like she was LIZ PHAIR.

i didn't say Judas should've been the lead single, i said it shouldn't have been a single at all.

BTW could have been an amazing statement in her career if she released it as a second single alongside the album or as a 3rd single, she shouldn't have capitalized the whole era around it. the gays lived for it but the general public didn't buy into it. she was bound to fall off, but to go from effortlessly selling 15m copies to hardly shipping 2m in 3 years was shocking to most people. the BTW era turned her from the biggest and most likable POP STAR on the planet to a self-absorbed artist who has very important things to say. don't get me wrong, i adore self-absorbed Gaga, but the GP hates her.

No, you're wrong. The statement is in coming back with that song. It's the lead single, it's what everybody was waiting for, all eyes on her - it's totally not the same if you play it safe with Edge of Glory and then keep Born This Way in the back pocket for later. The entire purpose was to come out all guns blazing with an anthem for, and about, the gays.
 
Born This Way was an immediate-term win, a short-mid-term career disaster (for all the reasons mentioned), but ultimately a long-term victory.

When she did it at the Superbowl, I screamed. In the Trump era, and especially now, it became an extremely important song, and will arguably be her most enduring standard.

The only shame was that The Edge of Glory got somewhat overlooked, despite being a classic for the ages, due to the sheen coming off the Gaga brand by that point.
 
Apart from a few bitchy Madonna stans on message boards(and Madonna herself), Born This Way was instantly loved by the general public. It wasn’t a disaster in any sense. I think people give too much weight to the reactions on online pop forums.
 
It‘s just that it was a more „niche“ statement than the previous hits which also heterosexual chavs could relate too.
She went full on LGBTQ mode and chose not to look back. :disco:
 
My love for Born This Way only grows over time. I love hearing it "in real life", on the rare occasions that I do, because it's always like which gay in the Starbucks / supermarket put this on the playlist

And I also love that - in spite of all the "reductive" plagiarism talk - it's just a fantastic song, which stands up just as well acapella, or in country or gospel versions, as it does in its original gay bussy-pop form.

 
I've gone down a Gaga hole this lunchtime and I'm pussy-popping to all the basic bops off ASIB: Heal Me and Hair, Body, Face are everything I need today.
 
Look What I Found is my favourite song on ASIB. Some of the ways she uses her voice are almost Mariah-esque, a really great vocal.

Heal Me, Hair Body Face, Before I Cry and the maudlin country bumpkin nonsense of Diggin' My Grave all do the trick too.

What on earth is that list? :D

So there have only ever been ten number ones in France then?
 
I've decided that we need a full remix album with various production options for each of these bops, eg. leaked / demo mixes of Free Woman and Babylon + a full album of piano / acoustic versions (yes, the Jo-Stan in me popped out). Oh and full orchestral with beats versions to fit with the interludes.

Give the gays everything they want, Gags.
