Yes I remember it being everywhere for a while. I suppose it being possibly the most broadly radio friendly song ever written probably helps.
 
Although clearly the producers were not fans! I can't recall a single other time that a new number 1 gets cut off before the first chorus is over!
 
FreakPower had a hit in 1998, 3 years after "Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out"? AGOG. Especially as Norman Cook was already super busy at this time with Fatboy Slim, Mighty Dub Katz, thousands of remixes etc
 
So pleased Steps are here :disco: What a cracker tune, and two weeks in a row. I assume we will get it when it climbs again in a few weeks

I found it interesting Savage Garden made the track a duet with the backing vocalist. The other backing vocalist next to her must have felt a bit useless.

We’ve moved to a New visual era! I did always prefer the 1995-1998 graphics but oh well.

Steps there showing we are about to get to that pop peak! Wow at that Byzone track getting cut so short!

One thing I’m noticing is the sheer amount of not recorded for this episode performances (and I don’t mean the repeats).

Mavericks - I assume they are MAGA now?!

Second episode was a bit odd. They decided to skip an opportunity to have Garbage and Bluetones on? And ignored Madonna?

The Freakpower performance seemed a bit AREN’T WE COOL self indulgent. I’m surprised Jo Wiley wasn’t in that performance.
 
The Corrs riding a dancey Fleetwood Mac cover on the way to becoming the biggest band of 1998. 3 million copies of the album sold! Astonishing numbers from a band that squeezed mega success into a couple of years & now seem rather forgotten.
 
Dull ballad from Simply Red, already a long way removed from the chart conquering "Stars" which, like them or not, was stuffed with radio friendly hits.

His hair has actually, somehow, gotten WORSE. The tabloid image of him as some sort of LOTHARIO at this point is utterly perplexing.
 
I haven’t watched but I think this was from when there was a few weeks where nothing much new made it big? Pretty much Steps, Mavericks, The Tamperer etc all just hung about for over a month in the top ten.
 
Is it me or were the crowd getting into simply red? Lolz at litigations Mick Hucknall singing he gets blown around the world…

I find it amusing that The Corrs finally hit big with a far removed from their normal sound remix. I wonder whose idea it was as I think Dreams had been released as a single before.

Lutricia McNeal popping in on first week for once. Interesting that she was the highest new entry that week, yet still rose up the charts. An odd week that (and odder next week with further rises for hits in their fifth week).

Shame Hinda Hicks got missed in that first episode. Imaani followed by a Eurovision hopeful eight years later.

Not keen on that rendition of Wyclef! Adam Garcia looking totally camp!
 
I still maintain The Corrs' version is actually better than Fleetwood Mac, but I also accept I am perhaps the only person in the world with that view.

Quite an oddity in their discography though - even before the Todd Terry remix took over, their own album version had already gone down the dance route. Given they only really re-visited that sound once more in their career (Give Me A Reason), it was very clearly something the band had zero interest in, and it was purely a grab for Radio 1 attention.
 
Loved this audience member during Leann Rimes. I do hope she made it onto a stage herself one day :disco:

I guess there were a lot of songs hanging around the charts at this point. Unusually you hav several songs, climbing or non-moving. I always remember it happening with the likes of How Do I Live, Dance The Night Away, My Heart Will Go On, Truly Madly Deeply but never really clocked that it was all concurrent. Run DMZ being number 1 for so many weeks also at the same time just adds to the feel that the charts were particularly static for the time.

I wonder WHY this way? It wasn't a permanent change of course, we're a couple of years out from breaking the record of number of one-week number ones. Just a low period for anyone relasing anything big and shaking the charts up a bit?
 
But yes, I've only started watching these around six weeks ago and it's really disappointing seeing the exact same perf we've literally just sat though. I never need to see that Savage Garden performance with Doon Mckachian weirdly singing half of it again

It's crazy to think that realistically their major success was really just crammed into the three year period from 1998 to 2000. It really felt like they were inescapable for much longer than that.

That really is nuts thinking about it. I guess when they finally hit big, having the prior album get its own success concurrently ended up making it three big ‘eras’ kind of done in the space of two.
