Quite funny watching the TOTP audience not know what to do with themselves during that "speed garage" track from Double 99.
 
Barbie Girl got its reappraisal with the film, I can't be fucked with it, it's annoying squeaky crap and, as anyone can tell you, even if you intend to make annoying squeaky crap, it's still annoying squeaky crap.
 
Never was anything less aimed at me than the Backstreet Boys. Which is fair enough but this is terrible.
 
I can never hear Torn without think of David Armand's "interpretive dance" - the time when wee Nat joined in seems to have vanished from YouTube, which is a shame.
 
Embrace. Shite. The pioneers of "landfill indie"? Successful at the time but leaving absolutely no trace in today's culture?

Whoever at TOTP came up with the idea of asking band to film something for the video backdrop earned their money - very effective when it works.

I had totally forgotten Moby's electro-grunge version of the James Bond theme. Terrible. Also, Moby has the stage presence of a shoe.
 
Again, no memory of this scraping from the bottom of the Trainspotting shoe. Quite right too, utter piffle.
 
As reinventions go, the Texas of 1997 has to be one of the most successful and enduring. Wouldn't have it in the house but they completely redrew their map and gave themselves the career they have today. Fair play.
 
Who was still buying Candle In The Wind 97? Still in the Top 5 in mid November. She's dead and you never even met the woman, get over it.

No memory of Robert Miles teaming up with Kathy Sledge. Nice. Vocally she's certainly a step up from poor old sparrow-lunged Maria Naylor, albiet the song's a bit forgettable.
 
What was the reason for this Steven Houghton cover of Wind Beneath My Wings?

His smarmy delivery is really is bringing out the underlying cuntiness of the lyrics.
 
It's all getting a little weird now as I met Mr L around this time. So many of the completely saccharine songs from this area resonated at the time and absolutely make me cringe now.
 
Good on Nicole Appleton for refusing the indignity of miming the spoken word section of Never Ever despite the rest of the perf being a clear case of push play and shuffle.
 
The 1997 Christmas Day show was fantastic - I genuinely think that every single song performed on it is still regularly played on radio today, there can’t be many years you can say that about

In contrast I was at the end of a very PROTRACTED BREAKUP with the first MR S so a lot of things from this time RESONATE with me in QUITE A DIFFERENT WAY :D

Strange that there wasn't any usual Christmas set dressing though, was there? Was the BBC still too upset about Diana when it was recorded?

Amused that they tried to label it the top 30 of 1997 but then played a fair few songs outside. Also Steven Houghton was the 28th biggest song of 1997?!
 
Louise was fabulous. Stephen Houghton, I have no idea who he is, and what a pointless and shit cover. But he is rather :horny:

I watched the one with Kylie enlisting some drag queens in a not entirely successful effort to liven up the watery Stupid Girl re-write Did It Again last night. Not a career highlight.
