Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

Slow week for bookings in the TOTP studio in late February 1998? I can't see any other reason why Lutricia McNeal has shown up to promote a single that peaked nearly three months previously!
 
Cleopatra another CHART FALLER showing up. I guess there was little choice but to showcase fallers with the charts moving so fast at this point.

I never think of listening to this but I always enjoy it. The sort of random nonsense that could have only been a hit round this time.
 
Shania Twain debut! Quite a low key start to promote with one of the more countryfied ballads from the album. Of course, she had plenty more UP HER SLEEVE to keep the hits going for a couple of years after.
 
I liked N-Tyce's handful of minor top 20 hits as much as any other second rate girl group's at the time, but let's face it, they really were the Happy Shopper All Saints.
 
Gosh this Shola Ama track is very own-brand Mary J Blige, isn't it?

Not a bad song mind. But it's very obvious what the brief was.

Also making a return to TOTP is Mia Fyre as the lead backing dancer for Wes. She was previously the female lead”vocalist” who appeared with Los Del Rio on Maclean performances/ video.

Apparently Alane had a dance similar to Macarena that people danced to (though don’t think the UK got the brief)
 
God, I remember 1998 being such a poptastic year but you really wouldn't know it from all these barrel-scraping Britpop also-rans we're being subjected to. :gross:
 
Lutricia McNeal's little run of chart stardom remains a source of deep fascination to me. Where did she come from? How did this rather mumsy-looking woman of indeterminate age randomly spend a year as one of the most played artists on UK radio and then vanish forever? I need a documentary or a six part investigative podcast.

Also, I'm near-certain her backing dancers were paid cash-in-hand backstage.

I was obsessed by her. She even got a feature on Eurotrash (1993-2014) come Wes time.

Iconic. Also why did she turn up at TOTP so late into Ain’t That Just The Way’s chart run? Was she on the way to the studios on a late running megabus?

I had completely forgotten that Will Mellor attempted a singing career.

I am also having a massive Mandela moment about My Heart Will Go On. I could have SWORN it was clogging up the #1 spot for MONTHS?! Just two non-consecutive weeks it turns out? Am I going SENILE?

OH MY GOD. Mr Kate said “is that the Macarena woman” and I just laughed and almost accused him of being racist. Well now I feel like a cunt. :D

Marge getting back to the top for the first time in 8 years with "Frozen" was :disco: though.

Oh, the excitement when my cousin got the ROL album a few weeks later & I heard it for the first time - immediately knew she'd knocked it out the park :disco::disco::disco:

My new conspiracy theory is that they got Celine in for this dramatic lip sync of My Heart Will Go On before Titanic came out. These girls behind her all look FAR too bored to have any DiCaprio-related context.
 
Space buying a bit of time with The Ballad of Tom Jones.

I have fond memories of this, but in retrospect it's a much better idea than it is an actual song.
 
Quite triggered by Jamie Theakston referring to Madonna as OLD MADGE when she was almost exactly the age I am right now. :evil:
 
What an excellent hit rate on that first episode! :disco: The malingerers of early 98 (Never Ever, Angels, High) finally appearing to be cleared out!
 
Strong start to the second episode with noted Natalie Imbruglia BILLION STREAMER adjacent Big Mistake :disco:
 
Rebecca Wheatley is a great obscure answer to someone who had two top ten hits in the late 90s.
