And I wish "Vindaloo" had beaten "3 Lions 98" to the top spot, as that set in motion the CONSTANT REVIVAL of its many variants each & every campaign. Just lazy, rather like the constant recycling of "Do They Know It's Christmas" - come up with something new!
 
It's obviously minor Shania, but I do love When.

Largely due to my having misheard the chorus lyric and spending years thinking it was about how much nicer the world would be if everybody loved the musical Grease. :(
 
I have very few memories of Del Amitri. Did the lead singer make a habit of wearing a kilt?
 
Scream @ the hard cut from the riotous scenes for Vindaloo to Tina Arena delivering the vocal of a lifetime for a crowd that literally could not care less. :D
 
So wrong seeing 9 year old Aaron Carter here considering the druggy hell & early death to come.

The less said about his squeaky version of "Surfin' USA" the better of course.
 
Diva absolutely would have been a #1 if they'd gotten it out a month earlier.

Jamie Theakston's "In 1993 HE became a SHE" intro predictably :zombie:, but the bar is so low these days that I did think "Well, at least he did sort of affirm her!"
 
Question for @funky - was Looking For Love a situation where somebody had remixed the EBGT original and had a club hit with it, but the group weren't interested in releasing it so they rushed out a soundalike cover?

I once had a copy of Karen Ramirez's album. It was, shockingly, really fucking boring.
 
Lionel Richie really managed to keep his run of modest chart action going for far longer than you'd think.

As I recall, his secret was his apparent willingness to constantly tread the boards on the kind of low rent local evening shows that by all rights should have been completely beneath him. But hey, it worked!

Nope it really was a separate cover designed to launched her career. Nothing to do with an accidental remix (which EBTG ironically did quite well with)

He was also very good at following pop trends. I find his 00s output really shit for the most part but still love his 80s and 90s work

Looking For Love whilst not the biggest chart hit of 1998 was I think one of the top 10 most played on radio in 1998!

Bland coffee table covers getting huge radio play seemed to become a thing around this time - outside of Karen Twatting Ramirez (I'd put her in bloody SOLITARY CONFINEMENT), there was The Corrs with "Dreams", Brand New Heavies with "You've Got A Friend", Tin Tin Out with "Here's Where The Story Ends" & "What I Am", plus several others I'm sure I've missed.

We could also include the Jane McDonald medley landing at #10 in the last week of the year
 
I unapologetically love "Vindaloo". It may be that classic Alex James bassline but it's also just brilliantly recorded with the massed drums and the simplest na-na-na chorus in the world. Damon Albarn apparently hated that it sold more than any Blur single but, of course, responded by creating Gorillaz and selling more albums than any Blur album. Oops.
 
I fucking hate Tin Tin Out. I also don’t understand who they are at all, they/he/she started out as a quite decent dance producer and then almost overnight started churning out the most beige useless pop of the 90s. And somehow became the in demand remixer to the biggest acts.

Given the Todd Terry remix was a banger and what radio played at the time, I think unfair to lob Dreams in with that!

Thanks very much. I had managed to entirely forget about the Tin Tin Out cover of ‘Here’s Where The Story Ends’. Now I’m going to have to go and listen to the Sundays version until my mind has re-deleted the cover.
 
I don't know why it amuses me that one of Tin Tin Out is now an esteemed Doctor of Immunology. He went from trying to DESTROY THE WORLD to SAVING IT
