Relisten #5: Body Language & X (28/10/20 at 7:30pm)

This album is full of touchstone references. It is basically the sound of what she was listening to when she was growing up.

I considered "Promises" filler for a long long time but I have come around to it. Don't love how she sings "promissssessssssthhhhh" but otherwise production is flawless.

Promises is GORGEOUS. Breathy VOX on POINT. Excellent vocal layering/engineering across this album btw. Bonus points for the sitar (?) in the middle 8. I think this could've been a single if they'd committed to going an entirely DIFFERENT route with the singles post-Slow, instead of... whatever they tried there.

09 Still Standing
08 Secret (Take You Home)

It’s such a lovely groove (baby).

I like Still Standing more than I remember too

"Sweet Music" - I wasn't ready for it. WHY WASN'T IT A SINGLE?

Promises is a fine little groove but I can take or leave it tbh.

The Sweet Music analogies are great. I love the lyrics to this.

Boys and Girls It’s a DIFFERENT KIND OF SOUND

oh my god Sweet Music is SUCH A JOY! BOYS AND GIRLS. IT'S A DIFFERENT KIND OF SOUND.

I might just lose it...
when we make sweet music...

:disco:

the way Body Language becomes this super strange CLASH of squelchy electronic beats and bombastic 80s funk as it goes on is so alluring. Truly its own beast.

Sweet Music :disco: We needed something a bit bangery yet entirely in keeping with the album.

People go on about the singles but I'm not sure there's anything here that's ideal. It's more of a funky MOOD PIECE

07 Red Blooded Woman

"Red Blooded Woman" was the most immediate song for me on the album back in 2004, and I think was the only "proper" US single. I still love it, but there is better on the album. I think people thought it was a rip-off of "Cry Me a River", which is a STRETCH

On paper I should HATE this song. But it's really quite good, isn't it?

EDWINA, what was the A&R direction for this album? What were they going for cos as we all done said, it's such a swerve from Fever

Some people are convinced she was going for an American sound and certainly with tracks like Red Blooded Woman, you can hear that but the bulk of this album is shaped by her childhood musical inspirations.

For someone who was such a big Prince fan, this is the album that comes closest to being influenced by him.
