Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl (12th album)

yes but critics are reluctant to actually critique her for various reasons. Rob Sheffield's absurd 5* arse kissing fest in Rolling Stone was out within an hour of the album and would've read like that whatever she'd put out - I think other artists have to work harder to get a 70 on metacritic (and for some reason pop is rated on a scale of 5-10 critically and 80+ is the norm).

this is such an odd take. do you think the Guardian journalists were sharpening their pitchforks since the announcement of this album? or is it possible they all just find it disappointing and want to talk about why?

she's the biggest star on the planet - she has had so much critical adoration over the years. why can she not also be critiqued negatively when not delivering on the hype she herself has cultivated?
 
I've been dipping back into the album here and there and it's just such a huge step down in quality. neither melodies nor lyricism are there, and the production is at best bland and at worst quite bad. the best songs here, namely Honey, would only be pushing for top 10 on folklore, and feel like retreads. there's nothing new at all

when you're very prolific obviously not every album can be brilliant and that's FINE! sometimes fine is fine. but this album is barely fine. I'm glad there is actual discourse around the music.

Babe, they’ve literally collated all their writers together to all have dissenting voices without providing a single opposition argument for “light and shade” in what is their third or fourth article about how terrible it all is in a week :D
 
I have no issue with her being negatively critiqued, by the way- again, I maintain I am quite enjoying this album, but it’s entirely obvious that isn’t the world view and that’s fine.

The pile on does all feel rather “Erotica”-era, though…

I do think similar happened with the Reputation era. There was overexposure from 1989 similar to the Eras overexposure, and these things come in waves; she'll be the People's Princess again within 2 years. I remember her saying a long time ago that she knows it can't last forever and she always assumes each album will be her last as the public falls out of love with her, especially as she gets older. You can't be top of the world forever, but one slightly mediocre album doesn't equate to the death knell some seem to think it is

I mean they were writing tonnes of articles at the time about how her career was over
This is no different
The media loves to take people down especially women when they feel they got a bit too big
 
I'm at the stage where I keep getting little melodies and lines from the songs stuck in my head. Found myself singing the title song to myself yesterday and I've only heard that three times. Maybe it IS a grower after all.
 
all her songs sound exactly the same to the extent that it is basically its own genre - impressive grifting!

I like a fair few Taylor Swift songs but have no interest in this pathological desire for accolades. The damage Kanye did to this woman is palpable.

She's clearly realised that releasing 31 songs - like she did last time - means that fewer songs get repeat plays so cutting it to 12 songs and versions thereof has given her the numbers.
