The UK: The Keir Starmer years - RESIGNED

If we end up with a fucking REFORM mayor in Manchester because of this I will RIOT

This is exactly what will happen. They'll lose the mayorship and they'll either not select him for the seat out of spite and put some wet lettuce leaf in who'll lose to Reform or he'll be selected and McSweeney and chums will brief against him during the campaign and he'll lose. This gives them the "well, he can't beat Reform so he's not right for Labour" moment they will wet themselves over and in the meantime, Reform have another MP and a mayorship.

Proper Bin Men for Manchester 'ON HOLD' :(

Andy Burnham has been blocked from standing as a candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election in Gorton and Denton by Labour's ruling body.

As a directly elected mayor, Burnham had to get approval from Labour's national executive committee (NEC), after he applied to be a candidate on Saturday.

Some NEC members were concerned about an expensive mayoral election to replace Burnham, and allies of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer feared he could mount a leadership challenge, should he return to Westminster.

The move is likely to infuriate Labour MPs and some ministers who said local party members should have had the option of choosing the Greater Manchester mayor as the candidate.

They've so shot themselves in the foot. It neutralises Burnham for now, but it's only going to intensify the resentment the wider Labour party feels towards the Starmer/McSweeney loyalists and their overreach.

It always makes me chuckle logging onto the Guardian in the midst of another Labour crisis to see her, ever-present in the top left hand corner of the main page, with the obligatory weekly variation of her "here's how this could still be good news for Starmer" piece.

To be FAIR, why on earth is Starmer to blame for Mandelson? Unless I'm missing something?

Starmer hired him for a key role despite knowing of his involvement with Epstein. it was clearly made light of and/or dismissed. it's an echo of Boris and Chris Pincher - warnings were ignored there too ("pincher by name and by nature" etc), and another case of dreadful judgment by a government that promised to do better than their predecessors and eliminate sleaze from politics.

if anything this is probably the most convincing case yet for removing Sir Keir. he's royally fucked up.

It was public information by 2022 that Mandelson had stayed in Epstein's apartment in 2009 while Epstein was in prison. That demonstrates a close relationship or knowledge of his crimes.

Starmer appointed him in 2024. At the very least that's an enormous oversight, at worst... well you decide.

it should be said that it was that useless rat Morgan McSweeney who apparently lobbied hard for Mandelson to get that position in the first place. and he would've taken care of vetting etc. unbelievable (yet also quite believable) that Starmer still hasn't cut ties with HIM...

I didn't know that, fair enough. Starmer has proven pretty much since he took office that he's capable of horrendous mistakes and an inability to read the room. I don't care if he goes, I just don't like the vacuum he creates if he does, and let's be honest, whether it's him or Burnham or Streeting or Reeves or Miliband, the right wing rags are going to consistently spend the next couple of years saying that they need to resign for one thing or another every single day. The same papers who said Boris Johnson "just made a few errors", or Liz Truss "wasn't given long enough", or David Cameron "was a great statesman". Being a Labour leader in this country is a horrible, horrible job.

love the juxtaposition. one the most powerful person in the UK, the other Keir Starmer.

The dirt McSweeney must have on Starmer must be absolutely devastating. How on earth does he still have a job?!
