I see what you mean but that can’t be it because it makes no electoral sense - they are on approx. 25% - that IS the base - the base is all they have left and it is that which makes a pivot even further to the right even more non-sensical.

If they have any hope of winning or even just mitigating the scale of defeat (holding onto the Home Counties) they’ll move a bit more to the centre - but Sunak really isn’t a centrist himself when all is said and done and the current parliamentary party definitely isn’t in the main.

He is truly caught between a rock and a hard place - a party (and a base) which cannot contemplate anything but more Tory red meat yet an electorate which has now moved well past that (borne out not only by VI polling but single issue polling).

This is the last vestige of the desperate.
 
Base probably wasn't the right word - I was probably thinking of that group that are pro-Brexit, anti-immigration, the ones who read the Express and call themselves working class but live a privileged, sheltered life and don't want their taxes going to help the vulnerable. The ones who love Boris but left the party in droves when the economy tanked and a brown person took over.

I'm not sure what you call that demographic. Other than cunts.

Yeah, I can't see it changing either. Labour's Pam Cox is currently a councillor and has lived here at least 20 years from what I can gather. Plus the continuing London influx have brought a strong Labour vote.

Should be a notable battle now. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

This is the problem they created for themselves by moving far right to eliminate UKIP - they have to stay in that territory to maintain the support of the press because it is run by outright fascists.

My train of thought when i saw the news:

That's surprising, i didn't know he was tory => hang on, didn't he do rowing => oh he was probably at Cambridge or something => and he talks with quite a posh voice too => probably went to a private school => oh yeah that all makes sense now.
