TV Ratings 2023 (1 Viewer)

whilst nobody seems to be talking about Love Island, it still looks the highest rated show on a channel outside 1-5?
All the shows above it were either BBC1, ITV1 or Channel 4 - and only Gogglebox for 4. Nothing for BBC2 or Channel 5.

And it's still the #1 show for both the 16-24 and 16-34 demographic.

Oh its still pretty safe then, I was thinking it may be on the way out.

Also the soaps are rising in a bit in terms of positions

Only 3 of the Love Island episodes made the top 50 (the highest #46), but applying the same % uplift those episodes did to the ones that didn't chart, I'd estimate 2.210m.

Disney+ shows are eligible for this chart thesedays, right? I seem to remember Obi Wan Kenobi sneaking in one week.

I ask because The Full Monty: The Series launched on 14 June and they marketed/promoted the hell out of it, but the reviews were poor/mixed, it looked awful, and the British public look to have not given a fuck either if it's not here.

Ooh this is very pleasing to read. I thought it was flipping hard and fast.

Yes, it would be eligible now. It's still relatively rare that anything from streaming services makes the top 50 though.

I guess it is, if you judge it by its own peak - it's considerably down on that, and I don't get any sense that people are talking about it, or it's as tabloid friendly as it was.

But if it's delivering solid 16-34 numbers, it's still a dream for advertisers.

I've just realised Black Mirror launched in this period too, and isn't there either.

Two majorly hyped streaming shows getting less than The Repair Shop, Casualty and a Nicola Walker crime drama that had already aired on UKTV. None of which rated especially well themselves.

We've known this for a while but the disconnect between social media/press hype and what people are actually watching in this country is HUGE

4 million for the top rated shows just goes to show how much viewing is spread out now, though.

Yes, that the top programme of the week is watched by well under 10% of the population is crazy, comparing back to days when we only had a maximum of 4 channels.

Of course that's only in week of broadcast, and I'm sure dramas like Ten Pound Poms will go on to find a wider audience, but I bet the soaps don't pick up that much more after 7 days.

What helps the soaps is that they are relatively cheap to produce. EastEnders costs the BBC around £140,000 an episode. Coronation Street is around the same amount while Emmerdale costs about £125,000 an episode.

Something like Ten Pound Poms will cost around £1-1.5 million for an hour of TV.

You have to remember as well it's about the manner of viewing. I am in no rush to watch ANYTHING on Netflix whatsoever because it generally gets dumped in one go and will be there (more or less) forever. That is very different to the world of the main channels.

Yes, I think that's increasingly true. Unless something is a must see on Netflix (and I don't remember the last time I had one of those), I just add it to my list and watch it whenever. And that whenever could be weeks or months away.

And I know for BBC shows which are broadcast week by week and only put on iPlayer each week as well (unlike those which are all there straight away), we will often not bother watching until they are all available and we can binge them over the weekend. So that viewing isn't captured in this chart, either.

LOVE that Elton/Glasto got double of the number 2. Which reminds me, I need to watch the set again without distractions

Love that for our Elton. Also Matilda!

Lolly do BARB publish the 28-day consolidated charts publicly? Following on from the good point Sheena made upthread, I imagine that's where a lot of the streaming shows (plus things that have done really well on iPlayer) really thrive compared to the traditional TV big hitters?

Although in this day and age they should really do 100-day consolidated figure chart, as within a month is increasingly QUITE SOON for me to start watching a breakout hit.

No, they used to, but stopped it at some point without me noticing initially, I think over a year ago. And none of the twitter accounts I follow post any of them as highlights even any more, so I'm guessing BARB must have them behind a paywall, if available outside the industry at all. Occasionally the BBC may tweet something about a show of theirs, but other than that, I've not seen the 28 day consolidated figures anywhere for a long time.

This was the week of the big Cindy reveal/return in EE - looks like it got a decent bump from the leaks/word of mouth.

The Monday and Tuesday shows both got 3.3m, and then the Weds and Thurs both approx 3.7m - so it will be interesting to see if it carries over next week.

I've not been following closely week by week, but I imagine it rarely if at all has come within a million of Coronation Street recently.

Using the same calculation as last week, I'd estimate 2.289m for Love Island, up slightly on last week. And if you exclude the launch episode which had just over 3m, the audience has been very similar since the beginning of the series.

I have finally caught up on Love Island, and must say it is much better than the Winter season and I am once again ADDICTED.

I think I consume most my telly through clips on tiktok now… or gogglebox. I don’t have many shows I actually sit and watch the full thing of.

Yes that new Idris Elba drama I have followed all I need to on both episodes through Gogglebox :D

Me too seeing as everything is on different platforms these days. It seems Paramount + is the one to get now. I can't keep up! *Sticks on DAVE on loop*

I seriously find the amount of choice (and then the plethora of platforms) so overwhelming that I often DO resort to Dave, UK Gold or years old comedies on iPlayer, just because it's comforting and I know exactly what I'll get.

barb still not updated with the chart for w/e July 9 yet.

They have posted this though, which I found interesing:

Barb has released data from its Establishment Survey showing that 19.08 million UK homes (67.4% of households) had access to a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in Q1 2023. This was a -1.7% decrease from 19.42 million in Q4 2022.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ saw small quarterly drops in the number of UK homes with access to their services:

  • 16.96 million homes had access to Netflix in Q1 2023, down -1.1% from 17.15 million in Q4 2022.
  • 12.90 million homes had access to Amazon Prime Video in Q1 2023, down -1.7% from 13.12 million in Q4 2022.
  • 7.14 million homes had access to Disney+ in Q1 2023, a decline of -1.9% from 7.28 million in Q4 2022.

By contrast, NOW and Apple TV+ saw quarterly gains:

  • 2.03 million homes had access to NOW in Q1 2023, up +8.0% on 1.88 million in Q4 2022.
  • 1.91 million homes had access to Apple TV+ in Q1 2023, an increase of +13.0% from 1.69 million in Q4 2022.

If I'm reading that correctly, of the 19.08m homes which have a subscription to any on demand service, 16.96m have Netflix. That's huge, isn't it? Only Amazon Prime comes anywhere close, and I'm convinced that a lot of people have that primarily for delivery, rarely watch it, and would cancel the TV subscription bit if they could to save a few quid.

And although Netflix have lost subscribers this year, the rate is slightly lower than the rate the market in general has slowed.

I (like the majority of the UK by the looks of things) have a Netflix subscription but must admit I rarely watch anything on it.

I assume a lot of BBC shows weren't on because of Wimbledon, and EastEnders was shunted around the schedules because of it?

Love Island viewing figures seem to be increasing as the season goes on.

SLEEPER HIT

:disco:

No matter how much EE was shunted around - it being broadcast and not being in the top 10 is just terrible for it.
I have been enjoying it recently so hopefully it picks up as it deserves to at the moment.

I enjoyed that Ellie Simmonds doc, I didn't know much about her before but it was quite moving.

But it hardly ever is in the top ten any more - it only has been recently because it's summer and there's little else on. It had pretty much settled to being between #15 - #20 most weeks.

I do find it interesting that it's down nearly a million week on week though. It was still on, even if it was a different channel or time. But those people didn't bother to seek it out, or catch it on iPlayer.
