TV Ratings 2023 (1 Viewer)

Glad to hear it did better than the last C5 ones, but 20% is hardly a 'huge' % share.

2 million for ITV1 isn’t exactly amazing for a Sunday evening, is it?

I think that's my point - 2m isn't at all bad for Big Brother (if you compare to the last C5 seasons, anyway), but it's poor for ITV1 in primetime.

I think a lot will depend on how many people pick it up on multiscreen viewing - Love Island always does disproportionately well on that.

Personally I find the figure slightly underwhelming.

It's interesting seeing different perspectives in how this is being reported.

I've seen articles with it being disappointing as the 'huge' 20% is less than ITV1's average, but also how it was so much bigger than Big Brother since xx or the last series of Love Island.

I'm not sure claiming it's the most watched episode for a decade when it wasn't on for half of that, and it was on C5 and pretty much derided as a spent force most of the rest of it, is particularly useful.

And of course the last series of Love Island is generally accepted as a disappointment in terms of ratings, and didn't get the benefit of a ITV1 launch - so is getting 1.2m viewers more than that particularly impressive?

I still think it's underwhelming, but most accounts seem to be reporting it in a positive light.

I would have thought 2.5 million is quite disappointing simply because it was broadcast on ITV1. I would agree that comparing it to Love Island on ITV2 is unfair due to the fact that Love Island has never had that platform in airing on ITV1.

I am quite interested to know what the ratings have been like on ITV2 after the launch show.

Do we know how it's doing on demos?
For young adults (16-34) Big Brother delivered a combined market share of 48.7% making this the highest launch market share since the format aired on Channel 4 in 2006 (58.9%).

With 0.7 million TV viewers in the 16-34 age range, the show achieved a share of 26% across both channels, and 36% specifically on ITV2.

Which is great of course - but it's not like ITV1 is going to be getting the benefit of that on an ongoing basis, is it? And ITV2 is used to winning that demographic consistently with Love Island.

Also worth remembering that these figures so far do not include multiscreen viewing, and AS WE ALL KNOW, the YOUTH don't bother huddling around the telebox like it's the 1950s. I'm sure it will get a bump in the final figures.

That is really impressive. I didn’t think younger viewers would take to it and it would be mainly a legacy show.

I don’t really know how to read that as when it was on Channel 5 it was very much a show that had lost favour with a lot of the public and was on its way out, especially the last season. Now it is on ITV2 I am assuming that is seen as pretty impressive for them?

No, but specifically higher levels of demographic share do presumably mean they can flog the ads for even more?

Yes, 9% share is really good for ITV2. From what I can see for the week of the chart I posted above, their highest % share that week was 5.3%.

Of course, yes. I just meant that ITV2 have already captured that audience (and I believe slightly more successfully so) with Love Island. They aren't gaining a new audience, unlike if ITV1 was holding it. I guess ITV2 is proving themselves with that demographic though.

I guess what's important now is how it holds up.

Just reading an article looking at music streaming, and it had a lot of info re the media habits of 15-24 year olds. Apparently they average 58 minutes a day on TikTok, 52 minutes on Snapchat, 48 on YouTube, and 25 on Instagram.

I don't know why this surprises me, as I spend quite a lot of time with my twin 16 year old nieces and it's entirely consistent with what I've seen. And it certainly explains why viewing figures are low (compared to years ago) across the board.

I thought that TV audiences were lower now mainly due to the practically unlimited choice there was to watch on TV. But it's obviously largely also because younger people just aren't watching anywhere near as much TV.

Thats huge for Bake Off on C4 isn't it?! C4 hardly ever get up to 7m, even in BB days?

It’s so interesting to me how the channel number still means something. I am still not sure what channel Big Brother is on because I watch it through the ITVX app. Isn’t that what most people do now? So having particular channels aimed at particular markets just seems weird nowadays.

Yes, it's bizarre. And in the case of the Big Brother launch particularly I find it interesting because it was simulcast on ITV1 and 2 - why did people choose one over the other? And presumably, some people watched Big Brother SOLELY because it was on ITV1.

It's true of course that loads of new shows on BBC1 and ITV1 get a larger audience just because they are on that channel. But for a programme with the reputation and history of BB, that loads of casual viewers probably watched purely because it was on ITV1 seems crazy to me.

Do they just sit there with ITV1 on all night regardless of the show that is on!?

Well that's another thing that I see referred to in TV ratings figures commentary which boggles my mind. 'Lead ins' are still a thing. Some people clearly just DO NOT CHANGE CHANNEL. I could understand it from a laziness perspective before the remote control was commonplace. And I'm as guilty as a lot of people as watching an episode or two more of a boxset than I intended to, because it automatically starts and I can't be bothered to turn it off and go to bed.

I assume it's an older demographic, but I know my mother is a FIEND with the remote control and channel surfing. Although she doesn't see anything above 5 as 'proper telly'. And she's pretty suspicious of Channel 5 anyway.

Yeah definitely think it’s older demographic. Younger people barely watch tv anyway and when they do it’s rarely live.

Some people are shit at using remote controls. I’ve seen it with my own eyes and they’re also stubborn, refusing to learn the shortcuts.

Big Brother had its biggest launch night in 13 years for the reboot series on ITV, according to newly released viewing figures.

Consolidated figures - the amount of people who watched the show within seven days of the original broadcast on catch-up or as the programme aired on television - show the first episode pulled in an impressive 3.6million viewers across ITV1 and ITV2 on all devices.

This means the launch of the ITV series on Sunday 8 October was the biggest launch since Big Brother aired on Channel 4 back in 2010.

The launch show made it into the top 50 shows of the week, at #46. But that would have been only including ITV1 figures, not ITV2. Using the 3.6m mentioned above, it would have been #26 in terms of individual episodes, just behind Gogglebox. When I do the full chart tonight we'll see where it ends up, but considering the multiple episodes of Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders above it, it should comfortably be in the Top 20.

The first episode of Love Island this summer consolidated to 3.021m for purposes of comparison. Although that was the the #24 show of the week, compared to the #26 the Big Brother launch was, presumably because viewing figures are generally lower in the summer. And of course Love Island didn't have the advantage of being simulcast on ITV1.

On the subject of Big Brother specifically, piecing together tweets over the week, live viewing fell consistently to 875k over its first week. I assumed we'd get an uptick for the first eviction, but then this:

This is of course unconsolidated. The launch show added 1.1m over the week to its initial 2.5m.

And then 820k for Big Brother on Sunday, but up to 882k yesterday so it seems to have levelled out now.

It is however now being beaten by Married At First Sight on E4 (series high of 1.13m last night).

There must be a significant overlap in those two shows though, so perhaps consolidation will be strong.

Does Love Island generally get more live viewers than that or it is on par? I believe BB was getting 4-500k live viewers on Channel 5 on average.

I'm not sure sorry. And the BARB website (which you can view previous charts on) doesn't break the total down. Thinkbox, the website which does break it down, updates each week and doesn't have an archive.

I'm fairly sure Love Island performed better live than the most recent episodes of Big Brother at least, though. Love Island averaged over 2m an episode consolidated, and although it performed well on catch up/multiscreen, it didn't get as much as half its audience from it.

It is winning over a younger demographic which is fantastic but I can’t help feeling a tad disappointed and worried for the show in the long term. I need to just keep reminding myself it is on ITV2 and generally those figures are probably still impressive for that channel but it is likely to drop series to series.

The first episode of the Beckham series on Netflix got 3.813m, and the second 2.869m. The third and fourth didn't appear in the top 50 shows, so must have had a figure below 2.574m, and therefore on the average it wouldn't appear in this chart.

And that audience for the first Beckham episode makes it their biggest show of the year.
