No one really likes being that person in a restaurant do they? But I don’t see why places can’t cook things like fries separate from meat products especially big chains like KFC and Burger King, I always assumed they did until recently. I think the cognitive dissonance you mentioned plays a massive part in it. I wouldn’t touch meat if my life depended on it (when I was at uni people used to offer me money to try itThe main difference I've noticed in general I'd say is the vegetarian/vegan options in most cafes and restaurants now. The days of having to plonk for one or two options seem to be long gone - a menu of any size will usually have several options to choose from, or even an entirely separate V menu.
This Burger King and KFC nonsense has made me think though - in places like that, do people routinely ask if food is prepared or cooked separately, or is it just assumed?

One of them said she had tofu once, you'd think I was eating shark fin soup (which I actually have and didn't like). As if the imported Thai chicken the others had was a taste sensation.
