Veganism is a protected philosophical belief

The main difference I've noticed in general I'd say is the vegetarian/vegan options in most cafes and restaurants now. The days of having to plonk for one or two options seem to be long gone - a menu of any size will usually have several options to choose from, or even an entirely separate V menu.

This Burger King and KFC nonsense has made me think though - in places like that, do people routinely ask if food is prepared or cooked separately, or is it just assumed?
No one really likes being that person in a restaurant do they? But I don’t see why places can’t cook things like fries separate from meat products especially big chains like KFC and Burger King, I always assumed they did until recently. I think the cognitive dissonance you mentioned plays a massive part in it. I wouldn’t touch meat if my life depended on it (when I was at uni people used to offer me money to try it :D) but I’ve eaten haribo which meat eaters will call me hypocritical for.

This gets me- why are people so DESPERATE to make vegetarians “fail”? I get it all the time. It’s ridiculous- especially as I am someone who admits i’ll happily have the odd CHICKEN WING when I feel like it.

Because it allows them to stay where they are and not consider the option. "There. See? You can't do it. No-one can. So why bother?" when there are plenty of reasons to bother. I freaked someone out yesterday by saying I didn't eat eggs (context - a colleague had a particularly enjoyable omelette and my option was - for some reason - requested). It really bothers people when you say something that makes them examine their behaviours.

I do find it funny that people still think that meat-eating is a masculine pursuit. Listen petal, you bought that steak in Morrisons, when you've wrestled a cow, killed it yrself and sliced it into bits, come talk to me. And I'll call you a cunt to yr face.

I actually properly love almond and oat milk.

You get it when you stop drinking. People are arses.

FYI for fans of fake meat, these are superb:

Not keen on 1st gen Quorn (that mince has been around since the 90s and I think they've decided to just keep it around for people who like it) but some of the modern fake meats are great stuff.

As mentioned in another thread, the Asian countries do some amazing things with tofu as well. I thought it was all that spongey stuff but they do very meaty variations of it as well

Quorn mince is great if you leave it to stew. It needs time to soak up the flavours.

I prefer using lentils than fake mince generally now

But then I DO love a lentil :disco:

Alcohol is strange. It must be the only drug where you have to justify why you don't indulge. Even with caffeine people can accept that you just don't like the taste. But 'I don't like alcohol' only invites more questions.

I was considering trying the KFC vegan thing today but the one by my office doesn't have it so I had a salad instead. Very on trend. (Although it was in a plastic tub, soz Greta)

I've had my fair share of shit already for being in the pub (I like the change of scene, people and atmosphere) and drinking coke and only done it for 2 days so far. And when I revealed plans to stay sober until Manchester Beer Festival (24th) including weekends, oh boy. HOW WILL YOU MANAGE TO ENJOY THE WEEKEND WITHOUT ALCOHOL?!?!
I think I'll manage. Weekends may have revolved around booze, but imagine being able to watch some late night Netflix without worrying about how hazy the story details will be the next morning! It'll be alright, I reckon. I'll show 'em.

I know a lot of people who don’t drink alcohol, with lots for religious reasons and some just because they don’t like it. They often come to the pub and no one questions it.

I drink but never alone and could really go without it if needed.

Yummy 3D printed meat free steak.

I'll stick to my lentils thanks.

I've had seared watermelon. It's lovely. A strange alternative to tuna other than possibly visibly, though.

Although, perhaps if you let it dry out? I may try it.

I know right - food made from air. That's level 4 vegan. Level 5 is refusing to eat it because it casts a shadow.

I refuse to believe Wagamama's Vegan tuna is the silliest thing Claire from Steps has ever heard, considering how many times she's shared a recording studio with Lisa Scott-Lee.

I used to be a vegetarian for 12 years, but started eating fish and then meat again in my late twenties. In fairness, I wasn't very strict while I did it - I would have parmesan or stuff with gelatin in it occasionally and would pick salami off pizzas at parties. I eat little meat these days, but I'd find it hard to live without dairy products, fish and eggs. I try to avoid meat, but I eat it when I really fancy something, like a good pork/chicken katsu or pork and prawn gyoza in my favourite Japanese restaurant, or a nice roast chicken.
I don't understand some people's hate of anything vegetarian/vegan though. I had tofu in the work canteen yesterday and some of my colleagues told me how brave I was to go for it  One of them said she had tofu once, you'd think I was eating shark fin soup (which I actually have and didn't like). As if the imported Thai chicken the others had was a taste sensation.
On the other spectrum I don't get veg*ans who are all about animal welfare but own pets. My friend and her fiancé have a rottweiler, but he became a vegetarian a while ago and always tells us how all animals deserve to be treated well and we should all stop eating meat. Never mind that his dog eats more meat in a week than I do in a month. I guess the cows, chickens and pigs that go into the dog food are less important than his precious dog after all.

One of the regulars always drinks coke. It's more when people are used to you drinking something else, I think!

ClairefromSteps kicking off now

Thanks, another blue tick I'll be steering well clear of following :D
Catchy as I found their songs, luckily never became "a fan" so no real disappointment this time.

I love how in the follow-up comments she's making out like she was #JUSTSAYING and that it's just the price of it etc... after tagging Piers Bloody Morgan

And mentioning the vegan sausage roll. Nobody’s charging £12 for that!

I do like the replies of “well just don’t eat it”

Err this IS Claire from Steps you’re talking to!
