It's always so predictable when new vegan options come out, watching all the gammons going absolutely nuts about it as if they're FORCED AT GUNPOINT to go a) walk into Greggs and b) have the veggie steak slice rather than the real one. Bonus points for complaining about terminology... how dare you call it steak if it's not made out of meat
In my mind regarding the ethical aspect I "sort of care" or at least "get it" (a vegan would say otherwise) but can't find it in me to "feel too much" in that regard - the universe is, let's face it, a cruel place by nature and everything is hungry. Lucky us managing to cheat our way to the top of the food chain as well as having the privilege to be able to eat a plant based diet with the necessary B12 supplements etc - which perhaps we'll all do by the time we're space communists exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life forms and not eating them. That'd be nice.
Right now I'm like... I'll do everything to avoid befriending pigs or chickens and try not to think about it. I've seen how angry and depressed it can make people and honestly would rather keep a 'cruel' (fairly natural) streak than go the same way.
In other news, I am going to try to switch to natural soya yogurt for my breakfast, rather than the dairy version. I’ll never be full vegan but I’m quite liking chipping away at the odd thing where possible...
This is pretty much my approach as someone eating a lot less meat
mostly for environmental reasons (whilst also having some of the ethical stuff in the back of my mind somewhere heavily suppressed). I LOVE that there are more and more of these little veganuary fads and additional menu items as I quite like trying them and picking them when it's a decent option. It's all a step in the right direction and I just don't listen to the "hmph, but you still believe in animal cruelty the other x% of the time" crowd.
Haven't eaten beef for over a year now, I remember the last beef product I had, it was a Big Mac after a night on the lash in November 2018 (and had vegan food the rest of the weekend in some false sense of making up for it) and thought if I'd miss anything it'd be that. But all I could think was it's mostly the sauce I like in this thing and the beef patty is just 'there'. Granted, part of that is the McDonaldsification of the beef in the first place but I'm not that bothered about anything "real" like steak either. Quite happy with that since as far as I know cows are the biggest environmental impact. I try not to think about pigs too much as bacon is too good. Still pretty happily a chicken muncher HOWEVER if I went into a KFC now I'd have the new vegan one because I tried it and it's superb and I'd honestly not miss the real chicken - so might as well. One chicken life saved per visit, bonus.
Couldn't give a toss about fish to be honest and also don't want to be restricted to that ~5-10% of "unfined" ales either so because of that the most I'm likely to be any time soon is pescatarian. If beer all somehow became vegan one day then great.
It's nice seeing more and more options, bring 'em on. Might end up vegan sometime before death, if they keep it up.
That's been my textwall of personal preferences no one asked for
