At least that's something that hasn't changed at our place - we haven't had a proper "do" for yeeears. Sometimes they do a free xmas lunch in the canteen sometimes nothing at all but apart from a few departments having their own little private mini-do's nothing more than that.

It was nice 10 years ago when they used to rent out an entire local pub for the evening, big meal, free drinks and transport... plus team/morale building days during the year involving BBQs, sports and booze, random spontaneous nights out arranged by staff, leaving do's rather than people just emailing-all that they're fucking off, anniversary parties every 5 years... good times. It's a pretty miserable place these days and has been long before covid :(
 
My favourite colleague left this year so I'd be unsure whether to bother with the Christmas do if it did happen anyway.

It has also been tainted slightly by last year's being on election day so I came home drunk, put the TV on and cried like a baby.

I imagine a lot of places will not be reinstating events cancelled due to Covid in subsequent years. A handy excuse to let these things and their cost slip into the distance. Plus, with high unemployment, there's no need to keep the workers happy.

For me it's more that I work from home ALL the time so every year there's fewer and fewer people I know at the Christmas party. Although there is always @Tal of course :D

I think it's more that I didn't realise how miserable it could be until the pandemic. Half-empty with areas closed off and all the fun things either off or scaled back, it has changed the feel of somewhere I have largely enjoyed working.
 
I’m a bit gutted it seems I’m not going to get any sort of leaving thing from my job. Twenty years I’ve been there and a fair few people cried when I told all my staff on Zoom and I admit I was looking forward to a last hurrah :(

True that. It was the lingering effects of the previous recession that gave them an excuse to stop all that in our case. Actually it's kind of silly at our place and has been for.. a similar amount of time - we have the odd person like me who doesn't have the confidence to move on or is in a comfort zone but in general the staff turnover is INSANE. They pay peanuts and do absolutely no team building, do nothing to change the silo culture, let people go if they try to negotiate better pay via a job offer elsewhere ("we're not going to be put over a barrel") and end up just perpetually training up new people. Just as they're trained up, they leave for somewhere happier that pays twice as much. Rinse and repeat. If there's a bit of a dip in the profits, they just let people leave without recruiting new people for a little while - at one point they were down to 2 in Sales and wondered why they weren't selling much!

My place just had to do an across the board payrise in a specialist area because a competitor moved in, tapped people up via Linked-In, offered more money and basically rinsed out the department.

Mind you, the bloke that runs that area deserves it. Useless git.

My place is EXACTLY the same only without the crap pay. We honestly just can’t find good people these days despite a decent wage for what we do. There’s such a high turnover in general, we cope with a lot of people who are really crap at their jobs just because they’re not spectacularly crap in comparison to some who commit gross misconduct.

I’m really not sure what level of stupidity it takes with the misconduct thing as they always get found out and always get instantly dismissed.

Case numbers plus report of R rate is good enough to prove that we're definitely exponential again. As I could've told the government a week ago. Not like we had anything to learn from implementing measures late when wave 1 came or anything!

At least we finally have the app....... at the end of the month when everyone's going to already be in some form of lockdown (even if it's local lockdowns involving 90% of the country)

I’m cynical of the app is it centralised or decentralised?
Are Cummings and his mates getting access to all the data ?

It's using Google/Apple technology so doesn't that mean it's decentralised?
 
Decentralised as far as I'm aware - that's why it's taken so long as initially they were determined to do their own thing so they could harvest as much personal data as possible, your exact location at every moment etc. But when they realised that isn't possible with an iPhone because they're built with privacy in mind, the whole thing went out of the window and they had to relent and redo it based on the existing tech.

You will all be socially distanced though I would assume. I am a tad worried about the numbers now all schools and universities are back.
