Bad news in the FT:

“Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid jab far less effective against S African strain, study shows

“Preliminary findings show no protection against mild and moderate disease caused by variant

“The Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine does not appear to offer protection against mild and moderate disease caused by the viral variant first identified in South Africa, according to a study due to be published on Monday.”

We now have to rely on Boris & Co to stop this variant from getting in.

Is it the sort of thing where they could make some small tweaks to cope with the new variant though?

I was just about to say April sounds fairly reasonable since the numbers are coming down quite nicely and this time with the vulnerable hopefully vaccinated by then it's not like last time when we opened the doors while the storm was still howling. We should be genuinely on the way out of it by then.

But OF COURSE, this SA variant is a vaccine escapee that will probably mean another year of Hell and no doubt there'll be "some reason why they can't just quickly alter the vaccine". Fuck me, if that's the case I genuinely just want to die, this isn't living it's just surviving.... barely.... or more like waiting to die.

We're all just waiting to die, in the end :)

I'm genuinely envisaging a scenario where we're still in lockdown cycles for the next 2 years thanks to various mutations before the government (lead by societal opinion) just goes, fuck it - people gonna die, we need to start living life again.

>none of the more than 2,000 patients in the study died or was hospitalised

That's something. It's too small and too young of a sample size to really prove anything either way of course, but it's something.

Further down....
>There are caveats to the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed
Hmmm.

Maybe I'm clinging to hope, but thinking it may be a headline thing. Honestly fuck the media, I bet they are directly responsible for countless mental health problems and suicides.

I’m thankful for some of my parent friends. I remember one wrapping up a carrot for her child’s first Christmas with the reasoning of “whatever I give her she’s going to put it in her mouth and won’t remember it, so it might as well be a vegetable” :D

love this :D

18 years later, still putting things (roughly carrot shaped) in her mouth and not remembering it

Agree, it will have to become socially acceptable to allow people to die of Covid akin to how we view flu now or we will just never, ever be out of the lockdown cycle.

down to 400-something cases a day here. youngest classes back to school since yesterday. but the rest is still far off :(

Charles Walker on the Channel 4 news throwing his toys out the pram about the punishments for lying about going abroad, the warnings about booking holidays and pretty much saying we should go back to normal now.

Their regular public health professor: 'It sounds like a child having a tantrum because they want a unicorn for their birthday and no one can give them a unicorn' :D

As terrible as the government have been during this pandemic some of their backbenchers are a whole new level.

The worst region for covid cases in England is now RUTLAND of all places. I wonder if their low infection rates last year has caught up with them.

Random thought: 1 year unable to do stuff (and hopefully not much more) and most of us are being driven completely bonkers

And they say prison isn't tough on criminals, it must be a walk in the park etc. No. Imagine worse than this, but for 30 years

At least you get to hang out with other humans in prison.

No stats yet today... I wonder how many cases they've found down the back of the sofa this time.

I think you're generalising a lot here Cloud :D. In prison all of your food is provided for you, no having to try and find a Tesco delivery slot and wait for the delivery van, or chance your arm visiting the store with the great unwashed and unmasked, unpack everything or even cook the food yourself. Every week you're handed a canteen sheet to write how many Snickers, bottles of pop, packs of tobacco, Pot Noodles, phonecards and packets of Chewits you want (you could also get meat, veg, fruit, rice, pasta, condiments and spices and cook for yourself on the wing cookers at association in the evening where you also get to play pool, cards, dominoes and table tennis but this might have stopped to prevent the spread) and a few days later it all turns up at your door in a nice bag. You've got all evening to smoke fags, sit and play your Playstation, write letters to your friends on the out, watch telly, DVDs, listen to music or read a book. If you're in your room in the evening and want something from your friend a few doors down you ring a bell on your wall next to the door and some poor sap has to come and answer it, they might not get you what you want but at least you have the amusement of knowing that they have to answer that bell. Cleaning your room takes an hour a week maximum and you don't even have to buy your own clothes, pyjamas, slippers, bedding, cleaning equipment, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and bogroll unless you want to. You get your hair cut for free, dentist for free, doctor when you need one, often an onsite hospital wing, onsite religious worship area for all denominations. Your cellmate might be a psychopathic cannibal but what's the worst that could happen?

I really doubt it's as pleasant as it sounds, but feel free to go do a murder and see how comfy it actually is :P

Obviously it isn't pleasant, it isn't meant to be. When somebody is sentenced to time in prison their punishment is simply a loss of liberty, they aren't sent there for further punishment so they have options of plenty to do to keep them occupied. They can also do education courses, learn a trade or do NVQs if they feel that way inclined.

Mr F was a wing officer in a male Cat C for nearly twelve years, I only worked in there for five years in admin but during my time there I was in charge of victualling and stores, prisoner monies and earnings, clothing and equipment, paying the board of visitors' expense claims, paying the chaplaincy wages and expenses, paying the dentist and chiropodist and I was also the one who ordered pool table recovering, table tennis paddles and balls, wing cookers, fridges and freezers. I had keys to go into the main prison unaccompanied but I didn't have keys to unlock the wings, I had to ring the bell and wait at the gate (sometimes with prisoners) to be let in and let out of wings. I was also technically Gold Command for fifteen minutes during a prisoner on the roof lockdown situation in 1999 when Martin Narey had to leave the suite for something and told me to answer the gold phone if it rang. I had the joy of passing on the message that the prisoner would only come down if the No. 1 Governor stripped naked and brought him McDonalds out.

The smell in a male prison is unique and something you never forget.

Fair enough I can take the word of someone who actually worked in one!

Maybe we should all turn to crime - but I have a feeling based on experiences of the past year that having your freedom denied is more of a punishment than it sounds, even when it's "comfortably locked away". IMHO.
