For what it's worth I suspect various supermarkets will choose for themselves whether to do away with masks or not. But I could also foresee it being seen as a "middle class thing" so the masked ones would M&S and the like while the cheap "pile everyone in and shift them fast" ones will go maskless. So the poor will get the short end of the stick as always, as will anyone (like me) who's not poor but can't be spending M&S prices either...
Or, maybe, like "elderly hour" and "autism hour" etc some of them will have a "masks only hour". Depends on the level of demand from customers I suppose.
I'll probably feel alright with it not long after "freedom" day when my 2nd jab beds in but continue with the mask to keep others comfortable while the numbers are high. Maybe I will re-secure my phone and go back to removing the mask briefly for Face ID though. And I certainly won't be doing the "mask theatre" in the pub where you wear it for the 2 second walk between the door and the table. In this way it'll become more a "common sense" thing, it's just that it's unlikely to be common.
Meanwhile our line director said the other day "looking forward to seeing you in a shirt and tie one of these days" (he likes to drop hints and really that's his "level 1" type of instruction before he shifts gear towards the "level 2" of "that wasn't a suggestion by the way, it means do it"... but can get to fuck with level 1 as long as HR is saying "dress code is relaxed during the pandemic"). Here was me hoping the "new normal" would include a realisation that people do just as good or bad a job regardless of whether they're wearing a silly dangly thing around their necks.
