There's no way my family will comply with a cancelled Christmas this year. The grandchildren understand the need to protect mum, but she'll be the one encouraging them to break it.

Ain’t that the truth. My Mum is exactly the same. I gently suggested she stop having ALL AND SUNDRY round and anyone who does come should mask up and she told me to “give over being so silly” yesterday.

It's a tough balance between keeping safe and missing out on life though isn't it? I feel my parents are not getting any younger and they've missed a lot in the kids lives the last 2 years. We literally have no recent photos of them all.

Well of course it's being silly. If it was that bad they wouldn't have been having government parties last year, and she's been vaccinated now.

Sadly, I kid you not.

I have been and will be following all rules that I can like I did in previous lockdowns, and as long as my children are living under my roof they will be doing the same. Just because the country is run by a bunch of PILLOCKS doesn’t mean that I will be mirroring their actions. Like before whilst the virus is circulating at lightning speed I will be limiting social contact, and being as careful as physically possible as I don’t want to catch it or even worse pass it on to someone else.

I don't see it as following government rules and will encourage her to do the same. I can fully understand anyone feeling like a muppet for doing that. I'll be trying to tell her to tune out what any minister says and listen to NHS advice, and telling her things I read on twitter from NHS Million and the like. I think that's the only realistic way in.

Everyone is forgetting they did exactly this last year if you were in the top tiers. We had to organise Christmas in three days.
Was it 3 days? I seem to remember the tiers coming in starting the third week of December. I only remember because I was able to have a birthday meal with my family which would have been cancelled if we’d booked one day later. Or maybe it was moving different areas from one tier to another which was last minute.

Either way, now it’s established that the government themselves completely ignored their own rules in 2020, there’s no way anyone will comply now.

Can’t people just be as sensible as they possibly can? For example the best I can do to avoid catching the virus is a self imposed self-isolation for 7 days and take daily LFTs before seeing my mother, and that’s what I’m doing.

I think you're giving too much credit to the loud voices in the internet. A lot of people will still follow the rules but I agree that there will be less compliance, but it's not going to be EVERYONE not following the rules.

You are right, some people will still follow the rules, but sadly I think not enough of them will to have the desired impact on reducing the infection rate that we need.

I will be very frustrated if we have another winter of not being able to spend time with friends and family, but PRIMARK stays open.

I would imagine all the modelling is done based on a portion of the population ignoring the rules and another portion giving themselves “a bit of flex” - surely 50% compliance is better than zero and doesn’t make it a pointless exercise.

Anyway my Christmas plans have been downscaled a bit and I’m now going home tomorrow instead of to Glasgow on Thursday.

I’m boosted and I have completely wrapped myself in cotton wool for the last week while it’s all been going crazy out there.

My mum, who is comfortable with me coming home from a health perspective, has said that if there is some sort of lockdown before I get home then we’ll have to reconsider.

I told her she’ll have to change the locks.

Of course it's not pointless, every little helps. But unless we give more we're not going to get out of this cycle.

Yes, and it's marginal gains, isn't it?

If you have a gathering of 20 people planned and only 5 or so don't attend because of the new rules, that's still a substantial reduction carried forward if that gathering was a spreader event.

My employer was insisting we still have to go into the office last week in our admin time, rather than doing it from home or surgery. Let's see if they reconsider now.

My boss is insisting we go in next week too (albeit I only do 2 days in the office) but it's just so annoying when Nicola Sturgeon is telling them to allow us to work from home (and we can quite easily) and they think that they know better. If I now catch Covid before Christmas I am going to be furious.

I can’t remember exactly but there were two lots of tier announcements and in the second we were put in Tier 5. That was very close to Christmas.

The whole tier thing seems like a forgotten nightmare, and obviously how it affected you depended on the tier you were in at that point, but wasn't it announced about 6 days before Christmas, effective from a few days later?

Just popped to the shops; furious at the number of people still not wearing masks, in a massively growing wave, when over a third of my borough hasn't had a single fucking vaccine.

In all of the messaging why have they given up on anything about social distancing, and the 1 or 2 metre rule? Any reminder to the cunts out there not to stand close to someone and breathe in their face would help.

It was exactly one year ago today when Boris announced the brief opening-up from 23-27 December wouldn't be happening, and you couldn't travel to a lower tier from midnight. Cue a mass exodus from London with every single train bursting at the seams.

I think much of the problem with our parents generation is the OH I’M ALRIGHT JACK stiff upper lip nonsense which allows no room for logic or long term thinking. The government frustration has only compounded that but it’s more of an inherent attitude.

We have a cousins whatsapp group (there’s lots of us) and we’ve been worried/bewildered by our parents since it all started, but it’s only now becoming a problem because it’s spreading so much. One of my cousins parents were complaining yesterday of scratchy throats and feeling rough so they went for tests, she was positive and he wasn’t, so he’s gone out to play golf today with his mates :manson:

They can’t seem to understand the difference between “it’s my health I’ll do what I want” and “it’s not your fucking health it’s other people’s, not to mention the worry of everyone around you”. It’s so infuriating.

I don't want to make any assumptions for other people's parents, and obviously my mum is a lot older than a lot of moopy mums, but in her case I think a lot of it comes down to @Star's point - it's a balance between keeping safe and missing out on life.

She's 74. How many more Christmases is she going to have? How much did she miss out last year - and now she has to do it again? I imagine if you've got grandchildren or great grandchildren it's a highlight of your year you're being asked to miss out on. Again. Against a backdrop of our glorious overlords doing what the fuck they want.

To be honest, I can't admonish them for saying 'you know what, fuck this'.

I saw a video on Twitter this morning which I found amusing and can't find it again now. It was some radio show host in, I assume, the US. Caller has rang in and said he won't get vaxxed because he lives and eats well, is fit and healthy and his immune system will protect him. Radio host replies with "so you'd have unprotected sex with somebody with gonorrheah or syphilis?" and gets "no, of course not" back. Radio host then says "But gonorrheah and syphilis are both contagious diseases, surely your immune system will protect you from them?, anyway this conversation is nonsense" and cuts the caller off.

My dad is nearly 90 and this is my thinking to be honest

I do understand this and it occurs to me all the time, but I just revert back to one Christmas vs a lot more if you avoid getting it. An awful lot of people died in January because of that very mentality.

Of course they did.

But I imagine everyone 70+ frequently contemplates their own illness and death and are making their own decisions, in the face of Will This Ever End?

Yes I imagine so. Which is why we’re all biting our lips today at the uncle who went to play golf even though he’ll for sure test positive in the next few days.

Yeah. My mum is 71 and I personally think she could pass for 60, but she just literally told me on the phone that she wants me to exchange numbers with her neighbour in case anything ever happens to her. She’s really starting to get worried about these things.

And me at my mum who is off to a carol concert at a local small chapel this evening.

It's really tricky. I'd say there are quite a few older folks in that "I just want to try and live what few years I have left" bracket, but if we say okay let's take the risk, there are others in a different bracket who are being put at risk against their wishes.

Afraid I'm in the "time to move on" camp - it's disappointing that the first 2 vaccines are ineffective against Omicron in terms of spreading it but all indications are that it still does what it was designed to do in keeping it from giving people severe disease. Far as I heard most of those in hospital are either antivaxxers (who can lie in the bed they made at this point tbh) or there for other reasons and just happen to test positive. The booster will help limit the spread and is being rolled out at a phenomenal rate. What else are we supposed to do, I doubt everyone is going to want to lock down every year but that's what will happen if we're going to react to the spread of every new variant as this thing is not going away.

Really I think the only way to resolve the issue of "some want to take the risk and some don't" is democracy and if it keeps going on forever it'll be a pretty hot general election topic eventually

I didn't spot any no masks here this weekend and I've been in more shops than I'd prefer.

My mum is mostly following the rules but I think she's of the "if it happens, it happens" mindset now. It doesn't help that my dad died last year and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't mind following him although she'd never say as much. Earlier this year I discovered she'd been eating very little and her health was starting to suffer and as much as I try to help her and be there I can't be there every day at every mealtime. Last year I broke the rules by taking mum to spawn's house but only because my sister cancelled her trip up because she didn't want to lose her job if found out. The way I looked at it was we got in the car in a tier 4 area and got out of it in another tier 4 area 35 miles away and we were only in contact with each other, all of whom had been pretty much isolated till that point. The risk was negligible.

The risk was negligible and the benefit potentially massive.

Who has Covid in London right now?

Are you symptomatic or just routinely testing?
I have what feels like the very beginning of a cold. Slightly tight throat and chest and mild sniffles. I had been testing every day though and was negative until now.

Mr Kate also recorded me snoring like a pig last night. I never snore, ever. He was dead pleased with himself because I always moan about his snoring. Now I know it’s probably the virus. Add SNORING to the list of Omicron symptoms pls.
