I'm just giving out masks at work to people who arrive without one, don't see why I should be exposed.
There's no way my family will comply with a cancelled Christmas this year. The grandchildren understand the need to protect mum, but she'll be the one encouraging them to break it.

Was it 3 days? I seem to remember the tiers coming in starting the third week of December. I only remember because I was able to have a birthday meal with my family which would have been cancelled if we’d booked one day later. Or maybe it was moving different areas from one tier to another which was last minute.Everyone is forgetting they did exactly this last year if you were in the top tiers. We had to organise Christmas in three days.
I think you're giving too much credit to the loud voices in the internet. A lot of people will still follow the rules but I agree that there will be less compliance, but it's not going to be EVERYONE not following the rules.
I would imagine all the modelling is done based on a portion of the population ignoring the rules and another portion giving themselves “a bit of flex” - surely 50% compliance is better than zero and doesn’t make it a pointless exercise. You are right, some people will still follow the rules, but sadly I think not enough of them will to have the desired impact on reducing the infection rate that we need.

Yes, and it's marginal gains, isn't it?I would imagine all the modelling is done based on a portion of the population ignoring the rules and another portion giving themselves “a bit of flex” - surely 50% compliance is better than zero and doesn’t make it a pointless exercise.

Either way, now it’s established that the government themselves completely ignored their own rules in 2020, there’s no way anyone will comply now.
Can’t people just be as sensible as they possibly can? For example the best I can do to avoid catching the virus is a self imposed self-isolation for 7 days and take daily LFTs before seeing my mother, and that’s what I’m doing.
My dad is nearly 90 and this is my thinking to be honestShe's 74. How many more Christmases is she going to have? How much did she miss out last year - and now she has to do it again? I imagine if you've got grandchildren or great grandchildren it's a highlight of your year you're being asked to miss out on. Again. Against a backdrop of our glorious overlords doing what the fuck they want.
To be honest, I can't admonish them for saying 'you know what, fuck this'.
I don't want to make any assumptions for other people's parents, and obviously my mum is a lot older than a lot of moopy mums, but in her case I think a lot of it comes down to @Star's point - it's a balance between keeping safe and missing out on life.

Of course they did.I do understand this and it occurs to me all the time, but I just revert back to one Christmas vs a lot more if you avoid getting it. An awful lot of people died in January because of that very mentality.
Yeah. My mum is 71 and I personally think she could pass for 60, but she just literally told me on the phone that she wants me to exchange numbers with her neighbour in case anything ever happens to her. She’s really starting to get worried about these things.Of course they did.
But I imagine everyone 70+ frequently contemplates their own illness and death and are making their own decisions, in the face of Will This Ever End?
And me at my mum who is off to a carol concert at a local small chapel this evening.Yes I imagine so. Which is why we’re all biting our lips today at the uncle who went to play golf even though he’ll for sure test positive in the next few days.
The risk was negligible and the benefit potentially massive. My mum is mostly following the rules but I think she's of the "if it happens, it happens" mindset now. It doesn't help that my dad died last year and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't mind following him although she'd never say as much. Earlier this year I discovered she'd been eating very little and her health was starting to suffer and as much as I try to help her and be there I can't be there every day at every mealtime. Last year I broke the rules by taking mum to spawn's house but only because my sister cancelled her trip up because she didn't want to lose her job if found out. The way I looked at it was we got in the car in a tier 4 area and got out of it in another tier 4 area 35 miles away and we were only in contact with each other, all of whom had been pretty much isolated till that point. The risk was negligible.
Are you symptomatic or just routinely testing?Positive lateral flow today. Christmas fucked then. SHIT FUCK CUNT.
Oh no!Positive lateral flow today. Christmas fucked then. SHIT FUCK CUNT.
I have what feels like the very beginning of a cold. Slightly tight throat and chest and mild sniffles. I had been testing every day though and was negative until now.Are you symptomatic or just routinely testing?
