Masks still to be worn on public transport here, thank goodness for some sense!

We've also had an communication to say at my work people should still be told to wear masks. Let's see if that's taken on board at a local level...

Scotland, Wales and now London all saying a big FUCK YOU to Boris’s populist freedom day is very satisfying.

looking forward to my London trip a lot more now that there’ll be more mask wearers on the tube.

Is there anyone here that would actually stop wearing masks altogether next week?

The problem is the people who NEED to wear masks, anti vaxxers and people not following social distancing because fake news / inconvenient, are the ones who won’t. That’s why it needs to be a law.

Heck no.

I'll stop wearing them to the pub or restaurant because it's pointless theatre wearing a mask to walk two paces to a table then sit there maskless for 2 hours.

Will continue wearing to the supermarket and public transport though, for as long as prevalence is this high. Sure, the worst risks are from maskless antivaxxer types but at least we can do our bit.

We returned to the office this month. Lots of rules re: who can sit in a joint office with whom etc but overall I get the feeling people err on the side of caution and keep their ffp2 masks on for the majority of the time, especially when going to colleagues in other offices. In common spaces like lunch room, kitchen, office floors and bathrooms masks remain mandatory. Plus, I believe everyone is keen to get vaxxed or has already been vaxxed.

Removing masks from supermarkets, public transport and other public or indoor spaces isn't even really in DISCUSSION over here at the moment, luckily. I don't think that's going to happen for the foreseeable future.

Baffling to see how the buck of responsibility is being passed to the public again in the UK. But then again, that idiot also told people to be "jolly careful" so what else to expect, really.

He knows it’s a shit idea, he just wants to blame us for the next lockdown rather than himself.

So my brother went to the semi final at Wembley on Wednesday last week and it appears he has brought back the dreaded Covid and shared it with me.

I saw him on Saturday for a few hours, and felt some of my usual hayfever type symptoms with a slight headache Monday afternoon. I was due to visit a friend this coming weekend (my first travel of any kind in a year and a half) so thought I would do a lateral flow test just in case not really expecting to be positive. Unfortunately it was, as was the subsequent one my disbelieving self did - my brother then also tested positive on a lateral flow (and then got a belated ping yesterday). The PCR test arrived a couple of hours ago and will be sent back tomorrow. Currently it just feels like I have a bad cold but my single-jabbed brother is feeling a little worse. If positive, I will be spending all but one day of my annual leave cooped up in my flat feeling some degree of crap.

Bloody superspreading Euros, still it is a free for all from Monday anyway

This is an interesting read. It baffles me how governments can make the same mistakes over and over again. Numbers going down? Let’s open up everything again and act as normal. Numbers shoot back up, and we’re all punished with strict lockdowns again. Can’t we just live in a compromise of safety and caution with light laws for the next year or so while vaccinations continue to roll out? What’s the point of clamouring for ‘freedom’ if it’s going to put us right back where we started??

Sometimes I wonder if perhaps this will be it hereafter, like an infinite loop, over and over.

Goodness knows. Seems like it might have done in Scotland? But after next week all bets are off. Govt is expecting 100k/day

And I'm starting to drift back towards ZOE being flawed  (I know people hate the inconsistency, but I'm just playing at guessing and changing my mind as things develop, much like anything else). This plateau they've been showing for a couple of weeks just doesn't seem to be happening.
Wonder if perhaps, the issue is how it's proportional across the country as befitting previous waves but Delta works differently in that it tends to find, say, a school and spread like wildfire in a very small, dense area - of people who are generally too young to bother with nerdy covid tracking apps. So the overall "background noise" is level, but we've had a few massive school flare-ups, that kind of thing. They try to account for things like how kids don't use the app as much, but there's only so much they can do...

63 deaths today. I think that is the highest in a while but still very low in the grand scheme of things, thankfully.

I've never even HEARD of Mulligan and O'Hare ZOE anywhere except @Cloud's posts - I'm starting to think it's all some sort of elaborate deception :tongueout:

Oooh, NHS England has confirmed that masks still have to be worn in healthcare settings

You ARE healthcare, right? I mean I know you are - I just wondered if they could try arguing you're retail.

:D

Well as I get a lot of bemused "who is Zoe?" comments:
It's an app developed by Kings College London and used by about a million active users who report in daily. They use a combination of daily symptom reports (or "I'm feeling fine" reports which are just as important), targeted testing and randomised testing along with some clever algorithms to predict how many people in the country have covid each day. Generally speaking it's tracked closely to the real figures (around a week ahead by the time people get formally tested and counted) but has had a couple of moments when something has changed and the algorithm has needed tweaking. They tend to be fairly fast at correcting once it's clear they're going wrong, but I'd take their notion of it levelling off with a pinch of salt for now rather than gospel.

No one knows what ZOE stands for.

It's led by Professor Tim Spector (critics say he is on the optimistic side generally), who puts out video reports around once a week, such as this one where he's saying it's levelling off:

It's them who are pushing hard for the government to change their definition of COVID symptoms, as they've found that Delta tends to present more like hayfever. Which at one point I criticised as them possibly picking up asymptomatic people reporting their hayfever, but seemingly they've controlled for that.

In the grand scheme of things it's fuck all.

Literally the only thing that matters in this context is deaths above seasonal average. At the moment we're actually lower than seasonal average.

At the moment, avoiding an app ping feels like an assault course. Was supposed to be doing a quiz with three others tonight and two of them got contact notifications today.

I've turned off the app.

I know that's fucking shitty but I feel at the moment it's just not working in an effective way and some friends have been pinged for all kinds of nonsense reasons. And the number of people who just don't have it. It's bullshit.

I do have to question how 'close' the contact is to get pinged. The only person who came close to us at the fucking Nando's we got pinged from was a waiter, and he was within 2m of us for only seconds for the 90 minutes or so we were there. Is that really close contact?

Mr L has chosen to turn the app off as well. I told him I wasn't going to sign in when we ate out at the weekend, but I did. I wasn't sure what I'd do if I got pinged, but I was seriously considering not saying anything, doing some of the lateral flow tests I've got left, and carrying on as normal if it was negative.

Apparently over half a million people were pinged last week. That's a ludicrous number of people to be self isolating and bound to impact significantly on businesses. I know from 16 Aug the rules are changing regarding the need to self isolate if you're double vaccinated, but a month away is a long time with half a million pings last week alone and cases still increasing - and likely to increase at an even higher rate from next week. Plus there are still going to be a fair amount of people not vaccinated after 16 August, although hopefully the fact that being double vaccinated means you don't need to self isolate might encourage people who aren't to getit done sooner rather than later.

Either way, I fully expect a lot more people will be not checking in at places, or disabling or deleting the app.

Has there ever been a case of a British government gaslighting its own population in such a way? The strange and unnecessary narrative of ‘Freedom Day’, promoted under the auspices of people apparently wanting to return to normal, which runs counter to almost all data that is available on public opinion - people remains cautious and rightly so. Completely bizarre, particularly considering we are hardly under lock and key these days - just subject to sensible safety and distancing measures. Absolutely no lessons have been learned.

500k was last week - ending about 7 days ago. I've heard of many more more recently. Expect that to fly up this week.

That figures, so the week after mine. I was the first person in my team of 40 to get pinged, then by the time I got back there were 3 others off, and now currently we have 5.

I've just checked, it's worse than that. Week ending 7th July. Honestly I'd be surprised if it was less than a million this week.

Don't turn the app off, people. The app pinging you is NOT legally binding, I know it tries its best to sound like it, but it's not illegal to ignore it. It's only illegal to ignore the ones who phone you up, who do not have access to your app data. It's very private and very safe to leave on.
What you can do is be aware that you may have been exposed and just be careful and use one of the free rapid tests you can get from most pharmacies (Boots, Tesco Pharmacy and others)

In terms of ZOE, one of the voices I respect the most on covid is John Campbell and he's not so negative about it, he points out it's a symptom study and that having fewer people with symptoms is a good thing. Means in the real world we're picking up more harmless asymptomatic cases.

It’s only going to get worse from next week !
offices with no social distancing woop. What’s with the 16th August anyway ? Surely the relaxation of social distancing and relaxation of the self isolation should coincide.
I’m certainly not having lunch with people and sitting in meeting rooms with a door open if it is not going to stop me having to self isolate if somebody in there has the virus.
I mean have these wankers in charge ever worked in an open plan office SURROUNDED by people or did they have a nice personal one they can shut a door and open a window.

Rant over

Completely agree that this is how it should work, and in the panic about people deleting it they've started to shift their messaging in this direction.

The problem is that it's too late as for almost a year the message has been "if you get pinged, you must isolate". When mass lateral flow tests became available they should have shifted the policy/messaging much sooner, but now they've left it too late and people are just abandoning the app in panic.

Went to the pub on Sunday for the football and four people I was in close contact with have been pinged almost at the same time. But I haven’t. Which seems strange. I’ve done a few tests and so hopefully all is ok and I’m just carrying on as normal.

I’m QUITE hoping I do get pinged the week of the Olympic athletics as I’ve got to go away to a festival for two days I don’t want to go but Mr Sheena organised as a birthday thing for himself, so, FINGERS CROSSED LOVES!
