Tomorrow Never Came is such a beautiful daydream of a song. there's something very magical about it - it's pretty sad, really, but the way it presents that sadness is kind of matter-of-fact and that in itself is sad, like it's nothing to get upset about that she never got her tomorrow in the city on the park bench because that's just life. it moves me.

I really love also the way this song takes its time gently building to its climax in the middle 8, with the meta lyricism of "isn't life crazy, I said, now that I'm singing with Sean?" - again, one of her most dazzling moments to date.

Change was written and recorded in SIX HOURS overnight on the day the album had to be turned in.

i think the personal songs on this album are also way less shrouded in PERSONA and clearly more interested in being vulnerable and "honest", which you can hear here. AND THAT'S GROWTH.

love that she ends the album on its OTHER best song. Get Free is that fucking bitch. one of her best choruses ever.

sometimes it feels like I've got a war in mind
I wanna get off but I keep riding the ride...

same hun. cheers to THAT. but there's real light, hope and optimism in this song, the kind that comes from taking those first steps to change who you are. it's incredibly well captured by Rick Nowels' production, that sense of a little ray of sunlight breaking through the clouds after a heavy rainstorm. I love it when an album chooses its final song really carefully and uses it to hint at what might be to come next time - sequencing is storytelling.

also love her vaguely UNHINGED "OUT OF THE BLAAAHCK" vox. the outro is so GORGINA.

The end three songs of this album are the absolute best for me, they're all so strong. I might even go as far to say Get Free is my favourite closer of hers. In fact, I've thought about it while typing and it IS!

Fantastic album. Not heard it in a little while so been very nice to reappraise and restan tonight.
